Animal Care and Control Officers Rescue Domesticated Ducks In Park

Date: June 18, 2019
Incident Type: Animal Rescue
Location: Zone 5
Summary:

Pittsburgh Animal Care and Control officers, acting on photos posted to Facebook, rescued seven domesticated ducks from Highland Park on Tuesday, June 18.

Officers Jeff Ley and Steve Costa arrived at the park just before 8:15 a.m. and did a lot of running around to gather all seven ducks by 8:40 a.m.

The ducks, known as Pekin or White Pekin, are a domesticated breed raised primarily for meat. They had been let loose illegally in the park.

Pittsburgh Animal Care and Control Supervisor David Madden said the ducks were so tame and friendly they definitely wouldn’t have survived on their own.

The seven ducks were taken to Humane Animal Rescue in the East End.
