Yesterday we had emphasized the importance of aluminum dome roofs and the reasons why it’s preferred over the steel roofs. But like all other industries, in this sector too there are some hucksters who would cheat the customers to make quick bucks. In the video below you can see the aluminum dome roofs were supplied to a water desalination company through an EPC contractor. EPC contractors by and large are fixated on the cost for their own profit maximization. Unfortunately , this is where these hucksters perfectly fits in. It’s the end user who suffers in the end. When these domes were hermetically tested with water under normal pressure the tank was flooded in no time. The design was so poor that there were gaps all around between the panels and the batten bar and the hub cover. The EPC client kept complaining for the leaks which fell on the deaf years and later on it was decided to use silicone based Sealents to fill those gaps. The problem with this silicone based Sealents is they get hardened up due to heat after sometime and give way to water/ dirt/ sand/ snow, dangerous to public health in case of mineralized water and refineries in case of crude oil and other Class I products. Lessons learnt : 1- Get the manufacturers design including FEM vetted from an independent structural design consultant. 2- Never trust those hucksters that they would ensure the material supply in full, always appoint a TPI who should check 100% of the packing lists , dimensional tolerances as per the approved design, and authenticity of MTCs (they are masters of fudging MTCs) 3- Hold payments and only release on milestone basis specially the leakage test. #storagetanks #tankterminals #refinery #waterindustry #desalination #domeroofs Mapa Group Saudi Water Partnership Company Saudi Water Authority

Why Aluminum Dome Roofs are preferred over Steel Roofs in Tanks ? Four main reasons to prefer Aluminum Dome roofs over Steel Roofs 1) Fire protection 2) Emissvity 3) Explosion / Frangibility 4) Structual Today we will cover only the first two reasons. 1) Fire Protection: Steel has an advantage over aluminum; aluminum melts at about 660 °C., steel at about 1482 °C. Also, aluminum is more combustible than steel. But both statements are misleading. Any fire that melts aluminum (660 °C. approx.) will also damage the galvanizing (or painted steel) that the galvanized steel will be worthless because the zinc coating melts at 420°C. During a tank fire it is more likely that the steel roof reaches the melting point first than the aluminum. The reasons for that are: 1- Reflectivity: Most of the radiation heat will be reflected by the aluminum (95% to 85%) 2- The heat conductivity for aluminum is on average 3 times larger than steel, therefore when exposed to fire it takes much longer to heat aluminum to its limit temperature than it does steel (the heat is concentrated rapidly in one spot). This property is especially important with respect to the fire safety of the roof structural frame. 3-The specific heat of aluminum is almost twice as great as that of steel. The specific heat is the amount of heat required to raise 1 kg of metal 1 °C. Thus a kilogram of aluminum will absorb almost twice as much heat as a kilogram of steel for a given rise of temperature. Combustibility of aluminum vs. steel is unimportant because neither will burn unless in finely divided powder form. Even the thinnest aluminum foil can not be made to burn, it simply melts. 2) Emissivity: Aluminum has lower emissivity than other metals including galvanized steel. Emissivity means heat radiating power, the ability to dissipate heat by radiation. If two solid blocks of metal, of the same size, one of aluminum, and the other of galvanized steel, are both heated to the same temperature and allowed to stand, the aluminum will stay hot longer because it radiates less heat. But radiation of heat through the roof and sidewalls of a building is not the way to cool any building. It is much better to reflect the heat off the roof and prevent the building from getting hot in the first place. That’s what an aluminum roof does, it prevents it from getting hot. Wow…this would have been an ideal spec, although copied with violation of intellectual property rights of Robin Essenius, MBA on the design. Till we saw their floating roofs in Iraq with a 5mm gap between the panels. In Turkish language, hucksters is translated as “Madrabaz”. One of the biggest challenge facing the tank terminal industry in emissions control is our own fraternity comprising of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). The full contact internal floating roofs are supposed to have an efficiency of 97%- 98% in cutting down fugitive emissions, as there is no vapour space between the roof and the liquid. But with the floating roof like this one in the video , the probability of sinking is 97% - 98%. First the design was illegally copied from somewhere and they had no clue of the design basis, then manufacturing & quality control were done like imbeciles in a hurry. As a result, for more then two months the tanks are ready in all respects for commissioning, while the the floating roofs cannot be assembled due to 2-5mm gap between the floating roof panels. The financial loss to the Oil terminal can be imagined with each passing day. What should the client / consultant do in such situations : 1- Check the last three client references for that product by calling them directly. 2- Get the design dossier vetted from an external company having a capability in the emissions control field. 3- Appoint a TPI (from your own cost) who would measure & test material , check all QA/QC documents, design data, manufacturing drawings and software validations. 4- TPI should inspect 100% material before manufacturing and before delivery. 5- Put stiff penalties on non performing floating roofs. 6- Don’t ask for a simple material warranty but a performance warranty.
