Pakistan is actively seeking $4 billion in funding from Middle Eastern commercial banks by the next fiscal year to address external financing gaps. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor, Jameel Ahmad, revealed this in an interview, stating that the country is also nearing completion of a $2 billion deal to secure International Monetary Fund approval for a $7 billion bailout program. Ahmad expressed confidence in meeting Pakistan's gross financing needs both in the short and medium term. The SBP governor also projected lower gross financing needs than the IMF's estimate of 5.5% of GDP, citing a decline in the current account deficit. Regarding monetary policy, Ahmad noted that recent interest rate cuts have had the desired effect on inflation and the current account, despite the reductions. The Ministry of IT and Telecom Pakistan informed the National Assembly of Pakistan (NA) that Starlink and other satellite broadband companies are eager to launch operations in Pakistan. However, none have met the licensing requirements for commercial services yet. Currently, Starlink is the only company that has applied for a Long Distance and International (LDI) license. In a written response to Zubair Khan Wazir, Minister of State for IT Shaza Khawaja revealed that while Starlink has gained attention, other international #LEO/#MEO #satellite operators have also expressed interest. These companies may offer various technologies, subject to meeting Pakistan's technical, regulatory, and security standards. Starlink registered with SECP (Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan in December 2021 as "Starlink Internet Services Pakistan (Private) Ltd" and applied for an LDI license in February 2022. However, their application process has faced delays due to concerns from stakeholders like FAB, Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Comission (SUPARCO), and SPD regarding technical and regulatory compliance. These issues arose as Pakistan's National Space Policy was still under approval, but it was finally ratified in December 2023, followed by the Space Activity Rules in February 2024 which are being complied with by Starlink and are applicable to to other NGSO/LEO operators intending to initiate operations in Pakistan. #DigitalPakistan #TechUpdate
