GMF envisions a democratic, secure, and prosperous world in which freedom and individual dignity prevail.
Informacje
The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grantmaking institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues. GMF does this by supporting individuals and institutions working in the transatlantic sphere, by convening leaders and members of the policy and business communities, by contributing research and analysis on transatlantic topics, and by providing exchange opportunities to foster renewed commitment to the transatlantic relationship. In addition, GMF supports a number of initiatives to strengthen democracies. Founded in 1972 through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to its headquarters in Washington, DC, GMF has six offices in Europe: Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Belgrade, Ankara, and Bucharest. GMF also has smaller representations in Bratislava, Turin, and Stockholm.

"If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together." The complexity and pace of change in today’s interconnected world means no one country can do everything alone. Allies need to come together to determine where and when they should work side by side to advance their shared prosperity. I’m working with the German Marshall Fund of the United States as the lead on this exciting new initiative. The GMF is synonymous with deep expertise and curated convenings that contribute to practical solutions. We will pull from existing GMF work and engage stakeholders to chart a shared path of what it means to compete in the 21st century. We will do so by defining allied competitiveness, identifying and developing proposals for managing areas of opportunity as well as tensions, and looking ahead to anticipate the future of competitiveness. Decision-makers in the United States, Europe, and other advanced industrial democracies understand that economic prosperity is critical in their citizen’s support of democracy. Look forward to engaging with all of you as we move forward with this work. More to come. #Transatlantic #Competitiveness Heather A. 🇺🇦 “People ask, ‘what can we do?’ Have conversations. With local churches, entrepreneurs, and Rotarians. With your family. With your local leaders.” 🚂 Last week, the Whistlestops for Ukraine tour touched down in Grands Rapids, Michigan, for a day of moving and meaningful conversations about the war in Ukraine, and how local residents are engaging. 🤝 The day began with a conversation about Dnipro, Ukraine - an International Friendship City of Grand Rapids. Justin Menkveld, CEO of local digital agency Calder Solutions and the Dnipro Friendship City Chair, talked about his company’s connections to the city, which has been heavily targeted by Russian shelling during the war. Representatives from the Dnipro City Council expressed their interest in deepening their connections with Grand Rapids. 📺 Next, GMF President Heather A. Conley spoke to two Michigan residents, Ukrainian Michigan State Fulbright Scholar Dmytro Shynkaruk & surgeon Mark Hnatiuk, as part of a WKAR at Michigan State University documentary tracing the journeys of a set of diverse individuals supporting the Ukrainian cause. They are just two of the countless stories of supporters of Ukraine in communities throughout America. Stay tuned for details about how to watch the documentary when it airs. 🎤 At lunch time, President Conley was joined virtually by representatives from the Ukrainian embassy for a conversation with Grand Rapids’ business and global affairs community hosted by the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce and featuring introductions by Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. President Conley spoke about the criticality of Ukrainian victory to American safety and economic prosperity. ❤️ Lastly, the tour visited HAS HEART, Grand Rapids based nonprofit that connects the veterans and creatives, at their coffee shop/community space, for a conversation with the local veteran’s community. “A lot of us have been on the frontlines. We know how that feels," said one veteran present. Participants discussed how Ukrainian veterans and soldiers might be better supported by their American counterparts. Hundreds of American soldiers have volunteered to fight in Ukraine, and over 30 have been killed, with countless more taking part in support activities like fundraising and advocacy within the United States. 🎪 The Whistlestop tour continues on August 13th in Des Moines, Iowa, where GMF and the tour partners will visit the Iowa State Fair for more conversations about America’s critical role in supporting Ukrainian victory. Last week, during The German Marshall Fund of the United States' Whistlestops for Ukraine, we had the privilege of participating in an engaging talk with US #veterans at HAS HEART Coffee Shop. The veterans in attendance were highly engaged, asking how they can help Ukrainian veterans and posing challenging questions like, "How do we know Putin will stop if Ukraine wins?" and "How do we prepare refugees to be ready to go home after the war ends?" Special thanks to Heather Conley of the German Marshall Fund (GMF) for their invaluable contributions to the discussion and organizing this meeting and to Michael Hyacinthe with Has Heart Coffee Shop for hosting this event. Your questions and support make a significant impact. #Ukraine #Michigan #standwithukraine
