Night Shift reinvestigates a case involving a series of suspicious deaths and a man who may be one of the most prolific killer nurses in the United States. In 1992, an unusual cluster of deaths at the Columbia VA hospital in Missouri all seemed to have one thing in common: the same nurse. The nurse may have murdered dozens of veterans. But rather than investigate the deaths, the hospital leadership seemed only to care about keeping the case quiet. Journalists Jake Adelstein and Shoko Plambeck (co-hosts of Sony/Campside Media’s The Evaporated: Gone with the Gods) go back to Jake’s hometown to investigate the crimes, the families, the cover-up, and the whistleblowers — including Jake’s own father, Eddie Adelstein. They’ll work on tracking down the primary suspect, the nurse, and try to uncover: What really happened on the night shift? Horrible story told really well

This podcast tells a really important story and I love the personal connection with his dad.
I’m hooked!

I’m not normally a true crime fan. But I am a Josh Adelstein (Tokyo Vice) fan, so I had to check this out. It’s well reported, well told, and I can’t wait for the next episode. Josh’s personal connection adds another layer. So good!
I was a witness

This podcast brought back a lot of bad memories. I was employed as the Head Librarian at the Columbia, MO VA Hospital when this scandal broke. Of course, as a librarian, I was never on the front lines of direct patient care. But, everything here is factual as far as I know. Limited though my knowledge is, the Library could be rife with gossip at times. One thing I can share with you is the name of one of the individuals who took this issue to Mr. Jacobs: Barbara McCabe was a nurse who worked in “QI” during this era. She discussed her concerns with me several times and she confided to me that she had made a report to Mr. Jacobs. I don’t think she would mind, now, that her involvement be made public. Sadly, Ms. McCabe died in a single car accident a few years after these events. I also knew (only as a library client) Richard Williams around the time of the unexplained deaths. In fact, two FBI agents came to the library, one day. They asked me if Mr. Williams had ever checked out any books from the library. I told them that he had and they wanted a list of titles he had taken out. I explained that we did not have a computerized system that would easily allow us to provide that information. In that case, they wanted to know if I had helped him find any information or what his areas of interest were. I replied that, as best I could recall, pharmacology and toxicology were areas he showed interest in. I couldn’t say whether his interest and his library visits occurred before or after the scandal erupted. I remember this, specifically, because these FBI agents took several books which they never returned. This was very annoying to me because the books were VERY expensive. I got the notion from someplace that they were going to dust the books for fingerprints, but that may have been an invention of my own imagination.
Night Shift is a hit!

I’ve never in my life paid to binge an entire podcast, but after the first 6 minutes of episode one (Code Blue), I got hooked. The way the story is told is so engaging and I can tell there are going to be twists and turns! I can’t wait to hear the whole season!
