Legalreader.com named Luis Correa as one of the attorneys that played a major role in developing the winning arguments in a landmark victory securing a unanimous decision by a 5-judge panel on Puerto Rico’s court of Appeals. The panel held in March 2021, that when an insurer provides an adjustment of damages to the policyholder, the amount stated in the adjustment is a liquid debt that must be paid immediately. The panel further held that the policyholder also is free to seek additional damages from the insurer.
El Vocero, La Perla del Sur, and Noticel reported on May 2021, the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico issued an opinion in the case of Feliciano Aguayo v. MAPFRE, categorically stating that from the text of the Insurance Code of Puerto Rico, it was clear the mere cashing of the initial check does not configure automatically a final settlement ("accord and satisfaction") that precludes a policyholder from seeking additional funds. Mr. Luis Correa Marquez was commended for his contribution to the persuasive argument.
Mr. Correa Marquez began his career at the prestigious law firm of Correa Collazo & Herrero, PLC, and more recently at the stateside legal firm of Weisbrod Matteis & Copley, PLLC. of Washington D.C.
