    About me

***Message me first if you can't find an available slot, and we can work things around :)

Hey kaibigan! Nelson here. I totally get how hard it can be to learn a new language, but I'm here to make it fun and easy for you.

I've been living in China for the past five years currently learning Chinese, and I won't lie, it's been a wild ride! As someone who loves learning new languages, I know firsthand how challenging it can be. That's why I believe there's no better teacher than someone who has experienced the hardships of learning a foreign language themselves. I know what it's like to face obstacles and struggles, but more importantly, I know how to overcome them.

But don't worry, I'm here to help you out. As a public health professional, I've had the pleasure of living in several countries like Singapore, China, and Timor-Leste in the span of 9 years. Part of the job was teaching English to non-native speakers, and I absolutely loved it! I even got the chance to teach English to elementary school kids in China, and IELTS-level English to doctors and nurses in Timor-Leste.

Nowadays, I can speak two foreign languages: (1) Chinese Mandarin, which I use primarily in a medical context, and (2) Tetun, the national language of Timor-Leste. I'm also currently learning French, just for fun!

On top of that, I'm a native speaker of three languages: Tagalog, Cebuano, and English. So if you're looking to learn Tagalog, you've come to the right guy!

But enough about my journey, let's talk about yours! Learning a new language should be fun and exciting, and I'm here to make sure it is. Here are just a few of the techniques I use to help my students learn Tagalog: spaced repetition, pattern recognition, visual aids, songs, games, interactive activities, and so much more. I've got all the strategies you need to acquire the language – that worked for me – making sure it sticks to your memory.

No matter what your reason for wanting to learn Tagalog is, whether you're a beginner or an intermediate learner, it's super important to practice with a native speaker to improve your retention and fluency.

Whether you're a part-Filipino looking to connect with your roots, a romantic wooing a Filipino heart, or just someone itching to blend in like a local making the Philippines your new home – I've got you covered.

And trust me, we're not just sticking to boring old textbooks here. We'll be hitting the streets and learning all the slang and colloquialisms that'll have you sounding like a true Pinoy in no time.

So are you ready to level up your Tagalog skills and have a ton of fun while doing it?

Book a trial lesson with me so we can assess your learning needs, and let's get started on your Tagalog adventure! Maraming salamat sa pagbabasa, kaibigan!

Nelson is an incredible teacher. He is very patient and non-judgemental during our lessons. He also takes a personalised approach to learning by steering the lesson towards your hobbies, interests, and things you do in everyday life. This helps to retain the information more effectively. Thank you Kuya Nelson.

Kuya Nelson uses Google Docs for his lesson materials which is my personal preference. He is organized and he adjusts his lesson plans and accommodates according to your level. You get to approach Tagalog from many different angles. We work with pictures and he had me describe each picture, prior to that he gives you vocabulary that you review together and use to describe the pictures and you can build on from there. I asked him if he could give me some homework to reinforce my learning and it isn't the intimidating kind of homework that we used to get in school... it's doable and fun! I learned so much and I look forward to learning with Kuya in the future. He is flexible, approachable and very knowledgeable about the language. Schedule a trial lesson and you'll see what I'm talking about!

Nelson is a great teacher. He is patient and makes learning fun. i am impressed with how he is able to work with his students to make things stick. We even translated a song in one of our lessons. Not only did Nelson work with me to make sure I was confident, he also has great knowledge on the Philippines, sharing his passion for the culture. His tutoring style is very systematic, organized, and i love that it is easy to follow on Google Docs. Salamat po Nelson!

Nelson's tailored approach to teaching Tagalog has been tremendously beneficial for myself as an adult and my our daughters- ages 7 and 12. First, he assesed our individual levels and also why we wanted to start taking Tagalog lessons. He uses that base to structure subsequent lesson focus. Our curriculum has included grammar, fundamental speaking and writing skills and translating songs for added fun and conceptual reinforcement. Learning a new language can be a daunting and vulnerable undertaking, but Nelson is really encouraging! He has the perfect teaching trifecta- 1. expertise (as a native speaker), 2. the ability to teach and 3. a kind and encouraging demeanor. When Tagalog speakers ask what we've learned, they are delightlfully surprised about all that Nelson has taught us. Nelson also genuinley enjoys teaching and is proud of his language and culture. Our family *highly* recommends Nelson for Tagalog lessons!

Nelson is an amazing teacher. He engages me with a lot of questions, provides really good explanations, and understands where some of my strengths and weakness are. I would give him 10/10 stars, and highly recommend him to others considering a teacher.

    My specialties

I want to focus more on techniques that improve retention like (1) spaced repetition / flashcards to enhance vocabulary and get familiar with sentence patterns, (2) interactive activities like games, music, and videos to enhance engagement strengthening the language muscles, and (3) stories and roleplay for real life application. If you prefer textbook-centric approach, we will follow a Tagalog grammar book depending on your level. I will assess your progress through simple homework and quizzes.

Freestyle speaking the old classic way. Let's talk about topics that interest you– travel, politics, sports, movies, music, science, and everything under the sun. Aside from free flow conversation, I also encourage my students to share stories with me, narrate scenarios, and explain more complex concepts.
