About the tutor

My languages are all on different levels (if in doubt, just ask me!). Nonetheless, I enjoy them all, and keep studying & learning different languages to this day. I also do language combinations on demand. I teach only adults in individual lessons. I use an informal and contextual approach to teaching, adapting myself to the needs of each student. I concentrate on helping my student learn by heart dialogues used in everyday life and situations, common sentence patterns, and appropriate vocabulary. I like drilling students so that they will memorise basic and advanced items such as numbers, how to tell time, names of months and days of the week, seasons, and so on and so forth. Of course, being able to converse is also important!I don't like jumping ahead before I feel students have had the opportunity to acquire a more or less thorough grounding in basic patterns and dialogues - by which I mean that you should reach a point where you do not have to think before you talk! I do not aim for perfection, and am also careful not to bore anyone to death by keeping harping or hammering on the same issues again and again! For me what is key is your ability to communicate well. I also tell my students the idea that making mistakes is not only fine, but is actually one of the best ways of learning a language, contrary to what is commonly believed!

As an anthropologist and historian, I have written and published extensively in English over the years - it is not only my working language, but in fact my main language, even though I was not born into it. I have one single-authored book (a scholarly work in anthropology and history) published in the US, and two co-edited volumes published in Britain and the Netherlands. I have also lectured in English in three different countries and two continents (Africa and Asia).

I have a long standing relationship with South Africa, though I am Brazilian. Moreover, I have been affiliated as a researcher to an English Department there, since 2014. I have taught at universities in English in Macau (China), Malaysia, and most recently in Istanbul, Turkey. I have also tutored in English at various points in my life.

I have another, also lasting, relationship with Malaysia (where I briefly worked at an English department, this time both as a lecturer and researcher). I therefore have three countries, even though I don't really have a second or third passport, transnational family origins, or even PR (permanent residence in another country).

I have taught languges online for over five years now, using conversation and teaching grammar as well.

If you wish to talk more, you could book a trial lesson with me (or just send me a message!).

Specialties

  • Portuguese for beginners

I have taught Portuguese to South Africans with no previous knowledge of the language, as well as to people from other nationalities all over the world. Of course, I have also used Portuguese as a medium of instruction in Brazil and Macau (nesta última cidade, contudo, apenas num único curso de pós-graduação em estudos lusófonos, já que os estudantes em Macau geralmente não conhecem o idioma, apesar de ser um dos dois idiomas oficiais da Região Administrativa Especial de Macau, junto com o chinês).

  • Conversational Portuguese

I have taught Portuguese to Anglophone and Afrikaans-speaking South Africans in Cape Town. For instance, for my research in Melaka, Malaysia, and Macau, China, I studied a little the Creole Portuguese of both cities (that is, a language that is not standard Portuguese but instead locally developed. Macau also happens to have its own brand of non-Creole Portuguese). Melaka Portuguese, for instance (called Pápia Kristang by some), is far from mutually unintelligible with Brazilian Portuguese (or Cape Verdean Creole Portuguese, for that matter), though one must make an effort to understand it. I personally felt closer to Melaka Portuguese than I ever did to Portugal's Portuguese, in spite of the barriers to understanding. Melakans are very warm people (whether or not they are Portuguese), and are in this way somewhat closer to Brazilians than to Europeans.

  • Intensive Portuguese

I have taught Portuguese on a regular basis to Capetonians in South Africa as well as on occasion to other nationalities, such as Americans, Australians, Russians, and Turks.

  • Portuguese Literature

I have extensive knowledge of both scholarly and literary works in Portuguese through having worked for close to ten years at Brazilian universities and one year at a partly Lusophone - i.e. Portuguese-language - university in Macau, China.
