I set clear boundaries and create space for things that bring me passion and joy, like a morning routine or a mindful walk, to recharge before diving into work. Yesterday, I suggested a team-building activity that focused on fun—sharing a casual lunch to connect outside of work pressures. This balance allows me to show up fully for the team while maintaining my own energy. I also use time-blocking to protect personal moments, ensuring I don’t lose sight of what’s most important. Leading with balance teaches the team that well-being fuels success.

The key is to focus on harmony and fluidity instead of balance. There will be times when you have to lean more into the needs of your team or more into yourself for the best results. The word boundaries is overused but the action steps are under utilized. Boundaries are guidelines and guidelines are typically written rules or best practices that a group of people or organization agree to follow. However, when it comes to self-care, most of us don't have clear guidelines for people to respect and follow, which causes a breakdown in communication. Having self-care rules and procedures for both the team and leader will serve as a support tool that assists with navigating the needs of individuals and the collective.

Prioritizing self-care starts with setting boundaries and managing your time effectively. Delegate when possible, and make space for regular breaks to recharge. Practicing mindfulness, staying active, and seeking support from peers are also key. Simply put, you can’t support your team if you’re running on empty.

By consistently checking in with yourself and your team, you can better anticipate when adjustments are needed, rather than waiting for burnout or stress to take hold. I’ve found that creating a culture of open communication around well-being helps establish those self-care 'guidelines' organically. When everyone feels empowered to discuss their needs, it not only strengthens team dynamics but also allows for more flexibility in maintaining personal wellness.
