It’s not unusual to have a power struggle between remote teams because the potential for miscommunication is higher when working remotely. Once I observe the power struggle, I will try to caucus directly with the team leads and allow them to address my observation while also proffering a solution. After receiving suggestions from the team leads, I will hold a joint meeting with them to discuss the implementation of the proposed solution and ask that we meet every two weeks to track our progress. If I observe that the power struggle hasn’t subsided after implementing the solution, I would have no other option than to arrange a physical meeting with the team leads to address the issue.

Power struggles are real and they can offset the cultural goodness of teams some ways to overcome these effectively would be - make sure the entire team feels psychologically safe in the team environment - they are not judged for sharing thoughts that are variant from the rest of the team - openness is welcomed and the team members are open to feedback - being vulnerable is ok and there is empathy within the team All the above can be managed by a manager who is people focused and understands that today different people need different things. Each persons motivators could be different and that is ok. If the leader/manager is able to display and follow these it becomes easier for the team members to do so too

One thing that I have found helpful is to coordinate a meeting with the parties involved. During the meeting explain how valuable they are to the organization and how crucial it is to work out differences because their roles impact one another. Allow each one of them to explain their concerns and inquire on what they feel caused the issue and how they feel it can be resolved. You want to make sure each person feels heard and seen because this will open the door for effective communication and a productive and positive work environment. Also, they will be present and actively engage in the conversation. In order to maintain a cordial work environment, you never want to make anyone feel like they are the enemy because they will shut down.

Facing power within a remote team can be challenging, but effective conflict resolution is key to maintaining productivity and a positive work envirinment by keeping below points in mind: 1) Ambiguity often leads to conflict so set clear expectations 2) As a leader always be a Neutral Mediator 3) Encourage team to work towards a solution together rather than assigning blame. 4) Foster a supportive and transparent environment 5) Understand remotr team members strength & weakness which will help you to solve conflict
