>> New paper published! Our team member Caroline Marques Maia co-authored a paper recently published in the International Aquatic Research journal. In this study, the authors investigated whether structural enrichments—useful tools for improving fish welfare on farms—also enhance the quality of tilapia fillets. They tested the effects of artificial shelters or water hyacinth as structural enrichments during the rearing of tilapia on the physicochemical indicators of meat quality after slaughter. Fish reared with these enrichments produced higher-quality meat, indicating that, in addition to promoting the welfare of farmed tilapia, these enrichments may benefit both farmers and consumers. > We believe that solid scientific knowledge is fundamental to improve the welfare of fishes and other farmed aquatic animals in a practical way. In the Summer Shoal 2023, we had two days full of very important and nice talks followed by great discussions about fish welfare. We had participants representing the most diverse stakeholders of the sector, then covering several important aspects in the field. Some participants of this event formulated and wrote down their thoughts and ideas to improve fish welfare. High-quality feed, with a formulation that accurately reflects the nutritional needs of fishes based on their species and life stages, is crucial for their welfare in farms. 💡 However, this isn't the only important aspect of feed provided to these aquatic animals. Fantastic work by the Aquaculture Advisory Council! This is an excellent reference document for the whole sector, and has the possibility to impact both the animals and the producers in a very positive way! I am also super happy to see that the text we drafted for the AAC last year on #fishwelfare and production is frequently cited here and was useful as a basis for this report! 😀

The catch branch of the fair-fish database is part of our Carefish/catch project, expanding the database's scope from aquaculture to fisheries. Each profile in this branch assesses the welfare hazards associated with every step of the catching process based on literature reviews. Stress response is a likely consequence of various welfare hazards that may occur in fisheries.
