I think I found the ultimate city for a family workation! I've spent the past few months in Da Nang. It's a fast-growing beach city in central Vietnam, usually famous for being close to Hoi An 🙂 But it’s becoming a destination of its own - walkable, affordable, safe, and filled with hundreds of work-friendly coffee shops. Walking through the streets of Da Nang, you can feel that it's a global remote work hub in the making. In 2023, we saw a big shift in the type of locations where companies organize retreats: 🏙️ Before Covid, most companies wanted to host a retreat in a city like Barcelona or Lisbon. After Covid, this demand for city locations dramatically decreased. 🏖️ Beach retreats have always been trendy. Southern European locations are our bestsellers for years. It's hard to beat that combo of weather, food, and affordability. Central America is on the rise too, especially Costa Rica and Mexico. 🏕️ The category called "Countryside" is probably the most interesting. It grew by more than 200% between 2022 and 2023 and continues growing this year. By countryside, we mean retreats in villages, nature, near lakes, and mountains. Glamping is popular, too, but it is still very niche. This is the data from Surf Office. I'm curious about companies that don't organize retreats with us. We launched a survey to collect this data. Not just location data (the ideal number of nights, etc.) If you organize company retreats, it would be epic to have you as a participant (link in my profile or below). It takes less than 3 minutes. The results of this survey will be published later this year as "The State of Company Offsites". For sure it is going to be insightful for everyone.

How this workaway in Barcelona turned out to be a generator of 12 product features... 32 people, 10 days, 12 product features, one hackathon! Mynd gathered 32 developers, product people, and business people for their retreat in Barcelona. Over 10 days, their goal was to run a hackathon, develop 12 new product ideas, and have plenty of fun via various team-building activities. Before the retreat took place, developers and product experts curated ideas for the work to be done in Barcelona. They prepared all the key design elements for the application as building blocks. This made it easier for the developers to build a great-looking prototype without a designer involved. It’s like using LEGO bricks – an intuitive process that doesn’t require the help of a designer. The retreat aimed to unite everyone, encouraging them to step out of their usual roles and work collaboratively on solving problems. This might have been one of the most memorable trips we’ve organized yet! 👇 (and yes, working was the main activity for the guests) 📍 Athens Riviera 1️⃣ Great developer hackathon👨💻 3️⃣ Days 6️⃣5️⃣ Employees Alephium's Athens Riviera retreat featured presentations, brainstorming, and networking among 65 attendees, set against stunning Mediterranean sunsets. We focused on what we do best: creating a productive and memorable ecosystem retreat. With 65 core contributors, developers, and supporters from around the world, our planner Cristi crafted an epic experience. The backdrop of historic Athens provided a perfect setting for work sessions, presentations, and passionate discussions. The breathtaking Mediterranean sunsets and delicious traditional Mediterranean cuisine added to the unforgettable experience. 🌴 An Urban Oasis in the heart of a city is the best accommodation for your company retreat🌴 Or is it? Three of the most common reasons against 🌆 urban retreats 🌆 I have heard are: 1. “We want to do a nature retreat, most of our employees are already based in big cities” Possible pushback: An Urban Oasis allows you to hedge your bets against potentially bad weather 🌞. Good weather = enjoy the outdoors 🏊. Bad weather = normal 'city break 🌧️🏛️' . This is especially relevant in late Fall & early Spring. 2. “We want to avoid the risk of some team-members splintering off on their own and breaking the 'whole group experience'” Possible pushback: No group has ever complained about having too much free time. Scheduled time to splinter off and explore in groups often turns into some of the best stories of the whole retreat 🥇 !
