“Laura is an exceptional lead engineer, probably the best I’ve worked with. She is a natural people manager, motivating and inspiring, not afraid of the difficult conversations and making expectations very clear. She thrives on collaboration and her boundless energy creates great ways of working in even the most challenging organisational cultures. Added to this she has a fantastic work ethic, I’ve never seen someone document specifications and meetings so well, and her clarity of thought, broad technical experience and pragmatism led to a very well thought through technical roadmap. She had a transformational impact on my team when she joined travelex and I very much hope I get to work with her again ”

You’re leading a team of software designers. How can you get them to work together more effectively?
To have a healthy team, it is key to have a clear mission and goals towards that mission, but also bring the why to conversations. Software enegineers love to solve problems with technology, but also are equally fond on bringing value and delivering impact. We should help them to: - understand customer pains, by having a direct conversation with product, design and research, ideally participating from time to time on research sessions, customer support calls or orhers to gather customer empathy. - connect the goals with those customer pains, so they see how what they build has direct impact - be part of product and design sessions and feedback loops so their voices shape the product - see the impact once delivered

How can feedback help you stay on top of software design trends?
I always see feedback as a present. We receive presents we hate or love and we decide to keep, give or throw them way, although we should be grateful that someone took the time and effort for us. Similarly, when you receive feedback you should listen, acknowlege and be grateful that someone took the time to give their opinions of your world to you. That feedback will always be their reality, it can be right or wrong, you are the only one that can decide to take it or leave it. But without it, you would always see the world through your eyes, and the limitations of what you already know. Without feedback, there is so much you can change and evolve.

How can you demonstrate your attention to detail in software design?
Clear and consitent naming of well defined units / module of code, are the best way to treat and help your future self and team members. On top, if you use the common language used to describe the requirements, you are future proofing the evolution of your code. Developers tell a story in behalf of the business to other devs. But always remember, naming is hard, overengineering sucks, there is no single magic way to tell a story, business needs will evolve and your future self will always find ways to do it better. It is always better to start that get paralised.
