How can you handle changes to a signed contract?
Many factors influence the negotiation. The most important is the type of relationship between the company and the rightsholder. For long-term relationships, like an Olympic sponsorship, brands can be more understanding. After all, there will be other Olympics under the same contract where the IOC would be able to "pay back" for the value lost. This is what happened when COVID forced the Tokyo Games to be postponed. For short-term sponsorships (1 concert only), a different approach is needed. Make good rights or refunds must be negotiated. The final (and least desired) path is legal action, which is costly, time-consuming, and damaging for both sides.
