Define the right moment to transition from being an employee to an entrepreneur is not simple. It requires courage, intuition, and a great deal of determination. Armed with this combination, Delino Souza made the decision to start his own business in 1974, after years of experience in companies in São Paulo. As Pernambuco was a reference in the furniture industry, he began with the production of varnishes and adhesives for furniture at the Industrial Polo of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife.
Thus, Iquine emerged, an acronym for Chemical Industries of the Northeast, carrying in its name the region that Delino was so proud of and wanted to see prosper. Despite the difficulties due to a lack of capital, sales grew thanks to the entrepreneur's persistence and creativity. Soon, the Pernambuco brand became popular among furniture factories in the state. When it came to varnish, no one could beat Iquine in the land of frevo. It was the beginning of the journey of a small company that, years later, would become the largest paint industry in Brazil with 100% Brazilian capital.
As if the challenges of a startup weren't enough, Iquine also faced successive impacts on its cash flow amid the instability of the economic plans of the governments of Presidents Sarney and Collor. In 1996, the year I was born, the blow was even greater: the explosion of a reactor caused a fire in the factory, destroying all the equipment and stock. Faced with a scenario of tears and ashes, the founder and his team decided to give even more of themselves to recover everything that had been lost. The year of the tragedy also became the year of the greatest growth of Iquine to date.
Today, the Iquine Group specializes in decorative paints, with more than 5 thousand colors available, and employs approximately 1 thousand employees. It has factories in Pernambuco and Ceará, distribution centers in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, and a bold national expansion project as a priority. In 2020, it acquired the brands Hidracor and Hipercor, increasing its production capacity to 220 million liters of paint per year, distributed to over 40 thousand sales points in all regions. It has thus consolidated itself as the third-largest industry in the segment in Brazil and the largest with 100% Brazilian capital. Quite an achievement in a country that is among the five largest paint markets in the world.

As our dear partner Ana Brandão Quaresma described so well, when I started my career almost 8 years ago at this tire giant, I had no idea:
1- how complex it is to make a tire, and how much technology there is behind this product!
2- how many committed people there are and how much pride there is in every part of this process. How many people deliver their best every day, their best version, to produce the best tire.
3- how meaningful the vision and mission of this company, which back then, through its founders, wanted to deliver the best product, leaving a positive footprint on people and society, on the world
and 4- as mentioned in the article by our dear Miler Luglio bochi, bringing diversity as a backdrop - e.g. having women in all positions, not just administrative, but wherever they want and are technically prepared.
Proud to be part of this team and this construction!

Aproveita pra conferir a matéria completa no Youtube!

Sensemaker of complexity and sustainability. Explorer of alternative leadership models that support sensemaking in complexity and integrative solutions to be discovered.
What an honor to discuss leadership in complexity, when ambitions are high with this amazing group and audience!
I really enjoyed the day organised by Stratvise. The amazing presentations by the two other keynotes Anton Lif on Cybersecurity and government trust and by Martin Lagerstrom on Data and Systems and how these can be used to lead interorganisational development were very insightful and I learned a lot from them all.
Excellent facilitation by Thomas de Ming and his team!
Thank you for having me and I look forward to more sessions like this and sharing thoughts and ideas that will generate inspirational futures.
