It's very difficult to comment or express what any decent human being, regardless of creed, color, politic view or gender, felt when witnessing the atrocities committed by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023. You don't have to be Jewish to be outraged and tormented by the images of decapitated babies, raped women, burned children, gunned down young people, and exterminated elderly. There were so many atrocities that it's even difficult to put into words. Any form of terrorism cannot be accepted, and what's worse is seeing how this tragedy has sparked antisemitism in Brazil (and around the world).
As the grandson of Holocaust survivors, I've always been cautioned about this, but I never thought it would reach the level I'm witnessing today. I have many non-Jewish friends who have written to me, asking how I'm feeling and if I have relatives in Israel, and I'm very grateful for that! Yes, I do have, more than 6 million relatives; that's how I feel. These past few days have been very tough for Jews in the diaspora, but even tougher for Israelis who have suffered this trauma firsthand and will have to continue to fight this war (against terror and antisemitism), not only for the more than 1,400 brutally murdered (and the 199 kidnapped), but for all the over 6 million who live there, for all Jews in the diaspora, and, above all, for all human beings who believe that in the end, good will triumph over evil!
