Chirp User Guide

Welcome to the full feature list and customization guide for my theme, Chirp. The Theme Options are categorized and listed below — they're in the exact same order as they are in the theme editor itself. If you need help installing this theme, please visit the theme installation guide or send me a message at my help desk. Thanks!

Theme images

Header

OPTIONAL The image that appears at the top of the header above the posts.

NOTE: If the Header image is empty, the header will instead use your Accent color.

Avatar

OPTIONAL The circular icon that appears on the left side of the header.

NOTE: If you leave this option empty, your Tumblr avatar will be used instead.

Sidebar

OPTIONAL The image that appears in a block in the sidebar, directly below the Updates block and directly above Suggested Accounts block.

Favicon

OPTIONAL The tiny icon that shows in the browser tab.

NOTE: If you leave this option empty, the favicon will instead use Avatar. If Avatar is empty, it will use your Tumblr avatar.

Theme colors

Accent

The accent color of the theme. This color is used throughout the theme in places like the links in your header and posts and in the left-side navigation.

Color Scheme

This will change every color in your theme that's not the Accent color. There are seven options total: the three Twitter color schemes (Default, Dim, and Lights Out), two color schemes centered around your Accent color (Light and Dark), and two color schemes from Tumblr (Tumblr Blue and Tumblr Dark).

Theme fonts

Font

Changes the font used in the theme. Includes the Twitter font, Chirp, and the Tumblr font, Favorit. System Default will match your system default font (Arial for Windows and Helvetica Neue for Mac). There are 33 other font options included from Google Fonts.

Font Size

Changes the font size of the theme. 14px, 15px (default), 16px, or 18px.

Changes the width of the navigation on the left side. 200px, 225px, 250px, 275px (default), 300px, 325px, 350px, or Icons Only.

Post size

Changes the width of the posts. 400px, 450px, 500px, 540px, 600px (default), 650px, or 700px.

Changes the width of the sidebar on the right side. 250px, 275px, 300px, 325px, 350px (default), 375px, or 400px.

Changes the icons used for the first five page links you have enabled on your blog. The default is a link icon; other options include Bookmark, Explore, Globe, List, Moments, Notification, Profile, Question, and Smile. Any page links beyond the first five will use the default link icon. To learn more about using page links, check out my FAQ.

Boolean options

Endless Scroll

When enabled, pagination will be replaced with infinite scroll.

Verified Account

When enabled, a blue verification will show up next to your Name.

Text options

Name

Optional The title that appears at the top of the header text.

NOTE: If left empty, it will use your Tumblr blog title instead.

Description

Optional The text that appears underneath the title of your sidebar.

NOTE: If left empty, it will use your Tumblr description instead.

Bio information

Bio Location

Optional A short line of text that will display at the bottom of the footer next to a location icon.

Optional A link that will display at the bottom of the footer next to a link icon. The link will automatically shorten, so make sure to only include a single link in this box. Including non-link text or multiple links will cause this segment to break.

Bio Birthday

Optional A short line of text that will display at the bottom of the footer next to a balloon icon.

Bio Pronouns

Optional A short line of text that will display at the bottom of the footer next to a profile icon.

Optional The title of your Home link. If left blank, it will use "Home" in your account's native language.

Optional The title of your Ask link. If left blank, it will use "Ask" in your account's native language.

Optional The title of your Submit link. If left blank, it will use "Submit" in your account's native language.

This block only appears on permalink pages of posts, and will display the avatar, blog title, and blog username of your blog, the original source of the post, and the user you reblogged the post from.

Optional This text appears as a title at the top of this block. If this option is left blank, there will be no title on this block.

Updates block

The first block in this sidebar. It displays a title and a description, which is HTML-friendly and can include things like recent updates, before you follow information, an expanded "about me" paragraph, etc.

Updates Title

Optional This text appears as a title at the top of this block. If this option is left blank, there will be no title on this block.

Updates Description

Optional The content of this block. It's HTML-friendly, so you can include hyperlinks, bold/italics/underline, lists, headings, images, and more. If this option is left blank, the entire Updates block will disappear.

Sidebar image block

This block appears below the Updates block. It will show a full-width image of any height. This block will only appear if you have an image uploaded to the Sidebar image option.

Suggested accounts block

This block appears below the Sidebar Image block. It displays a list of Tumblr blogs and includes their username, blog title, avatar, and a link to their blog. This can be useful if the blog is run by multiple members, or if you have sideblogs that you'd like to include.

Suggested Accounts Title

Optional This text appears as a title at the top of this block. If this option is left blank, there will be no title on this block.

Accounts separated by commas

Optional This is were you put your list of blogs, separated by commas (with or without spaces). Hyphenated blog usernames work just fine. If this option is left blank, the entire Suggested Accounts block will disappear. You can include any number of accounts, but be warned that this block uses the Tumblr API and can slow down your blog's performance if you include too many.

Here's an example of how to format your text for this option:

  • staff, changes, blog-username

If a blog username is typed incorrectly or that blog doesn't exist, it will not appear in the list of accounts.

This block appears below the Suggested Accounts block. It takes a list of tags that you provide, counts the number of posts on your blog that are tagged with each tag, and adds them to a list in the block.

Optional This text appears as a title at the top of this block. If this option is left blank, there will be no title on this block.

Optional This is were you put your list of tags, separated by commas (with or without spaces). Works with hashtags, spaces, and other punctuation. If this option is left blank, the entire Trending Tags block will disappear. You can include any number of tags, but be warned that this block uses the Tumblr API and can slow down your blog's performance if you include too many.

Here's a couple of examples of how to format your text for this option:

  • dogs, cats, horses
  • #videos, #future reference, #omg!
  • my face, #lol, me & you
