My Rating ~ 4.5*

‘The thing about books,’ she said ‘is that they help you to imagine a life bigger and better than you could ever dream of.’

The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods published with One More Chapter (Harper Collins) on June 22nd and is described as 'The Keeper of Stories meets The Lost Apothecary…evocative and charming novel full of mystery and secrets.’

I have read the charming work of Evie Woods, as Evie Gaughan, and have been totally captivated by the magic and warmth that emanates from her stories. Both The Mysterious Bakery on Rue de Paris, set in France, and The Story Collector, set in Ireland, swept me up in their mysticism and escapism, taking me on wonderful adventures. When Evie writes about France, her storytelling is reminiscent of Joanne Harris’ Vianne Rocher novels (Chocolat, The Lollipop Shoes, Peaches for Monsieur le Cure & The Strawberry Thief) with sweeping imagery imbued with magical realism.

In The Lost Bookshop, Evie combines France and her Irish roots into a beautifully woven tale that had me listening to Sidney Bechet and reminding me why I love his music and the gorgeous movie that is Midnight in Paris. The Lost Bookshop is a must for anyone who, like me, loves mention of the Lost Generation, Sylvia Beach and of an era when society and the arts carry a special kind of wonder and enchantment.

Martha arrives in Dublin looking for shelter, looking to escape the life she has been living. She finds work as a housekeeper for an elderly lady, with sleeping arrangements included. The anonymity of the situation suits Martha. She wants to be invisible, she seeks silence, she needs safety. As the days pass she becomes more used to her new role, servicing the demands of her new boss, and she experiences a temporary peace in the cocoon of the basement where she resides.

Henry arrives in Dublin from the UK in search of something. On the threshold of a big decision in his personal life, he needs this escape to Dublin to follow a thread, to uncover a piece of the past that he is finding challenging to get a solid hold of. Henry accidentally stumbles upon Martha. It’s very clear to Henry that Marth’s life has been difficult. She’s a fragile soul, one he is immediately drawn to for some inexplicable reason.

Opaline is about to be married off in an arranged marriage, negotiated by her over-bearing brother. Opaline covets adventure and freedom, so she decides to take a leap of faith, escaping to the streets of Paris, to a city that is overflowing with culture and artistic souls. Her head spins when she first realises the enormity of her decision, but Opaline’s determination not to return home to a life of drudgery compels her forward into an unexpected, but very welcomed, turn of events.

Martha, Henry and Opaline are oblivious to the invisible threads that bind them. As their stories unfold, we are transported back to Paris and Dublin in the 1920s and to a special bookshop that has rather extraordinary powers. Evie excels in creating escapist worlds where anything can happen, if you just believe. Not shying away from tough themes, Evie combines the hardship and reality of life with warmth and magic, creating a wonderful reading experience that dips into the mysterious and the curious.

The Lost Bookshop is a joy to read, a seductive tale that sparks the imagination, a truly immersive and charismatic read of self-discovery and strength imbued with a sense of hope and passion.

On publication eve, Evie wrote a gorgeous blog post over her website, Solstice, where she reflects on the journey that got her to this point, which I think really highlights the passion and the dreams of a beautiful person, both inside and out.

‘This book has my heart and soul inside of it, the sun, moon and stars. The rejection, the pain, the hurting; as well as the hope, love and wisdom I’ve gained. I’ve found it hard to let go and enjoy the moment. I realise tonight that it’s because it means so very much to me. It’s not a simple fact of raising a glass and toasting a job well done. It’s a lifetime of searching for a way to outwardly express the inner landscape of emotion through creative endeavour. It’s a jumble of heart and mind. It’s everything. And for once, I’d like to feel that. All of it.’

I was really looking forward to this given the nature of the story and the good reviews but it took me ages to get into it. I’m not a fan of parallel storylines as I find them hard to follow and a bit disjointed. As a result I put the book down, left it for a few days then went back to it. I don’t think that really helped.

Over the past couple of days I went back to it and as the story went along I started to enjoy it much more and the last hundred pages got me hooked, but after finishing it I wasn’t entirely sure what it was about.

I think it was something along the lines of the ghost of Opaline giving the hidden bookshop back to her Grand daughter.

I think if I read it again without so many breaks it would flow much better for me.

I enjoyed this story set in the present but with a second timeline explaining the historical background of the mystery the two main characters (Henry and Martha) are destined to solve.
The main characters, including the historical character Opaline, all write in the first person, and the two time lines run simultaneously, which is not required by the contemporary story. So it is difficult to follow and this is the reason I have deducted a star.
The contemporary story contains most mystical and paranormal elements, which comprise the wishes of inanimate objects, and the souls of the dead, to facilitate success for Martha and Henry in their quest - to find both the lost bookshop and the lost book. Predictably, these two also have some semblance of romance. However I found the characterisations, particularly of the male characters, rather superficial, so the interactions were not terribly convincing. The historical heroin is portrayed as a strong, determined and intelligent individual, able to overcome the formidable obstacles presented to her throughout her life. The contemporary female, Martha, is not at all assertive, but the casting as a victim of domestic abuse is described very well, and the character fits with someone who is susceptible to this life outcome.
There are many loose ends, and the author simply discards a thread when it has delivered the required narrative, particularly at the end of the story when the final twists and significant events all happen over a small number of pages. More could have been made of these, or developed earlier in the work. Principal in the loose ends is the complete lack of any background or outcome for the magical Mrs Bowden - providing board and lodging for Martha, and acting as a surrogate mother. She is an Edwardian elderly lady living in the 21st century. However it only detracts in a small way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece in pages
Reviewed in Canada on 21 January 2024
“The Lost Bookshop”, is pure gold, a masterpiece that implements the here and now into the magical forces of the other world, a world beyond reality. What a glorious book! It’s a story that weaves together three extraordinary, charming and peculiar characters in Opaline, Martha and Henry, each striving to write their own stories or to simply find them. Either way, this book is hypnotic in its prose, it takes fictional writing to a whole new level for those who truly love books. It is an enchanting illustration in a world where books are fundamentally important, playing a pivotal role for those who choose to hold those majestic gems in their hands. When a book whispers, you listen intently to what it has to say. This book speaks volumes, it absolutely peaked my curiosity, it was definitely a page turner and it was so hard to put it down. I basically plowed through it full steam ahead, like I was under some type of hypnotic spell compelling me to read on.

Life can cause individuals to view their own lives from the sidelines, not fully engaged within the confines of what life has to offer. It goes without saying that at times we all need a Madame Bowden in our lives just to add clarification to the things we don’t yet fully comprehend, a unique wizard of sorts who has the power to unlock secrets just sitting on a shelf. This vanishing bookshop has something to offer both Martha and Henry, they just need to conjure up the confidence to read between the lines and to see what cannot be seen, the author magically intertwines Opaline’s past life with the present. It’s pure genius, a fantastical journey where something lost can eventually be found if you stay on the majestical current path.

This book adhered the conforming gender roles during Opaline’s storyline, a time when women were viewed as the weaker sex and therefore not taken seriously at all. Women had voices, but were never heard. It is noted that women writers used pseudonyms when writing back in the day, otherwise they wouldn’t get published as efficiently. Author Evie Gaughan used pseudonym Evie Woods at the author of this particular book, just to drive that point home.

This novel incorporates great classic books, manuscripts and its authors into its storyline, and I liked that Sylvia Beach and her bookshop Shakespeare & Company were included as I read and enjoyed “The Paris Bookseller”. I am compelled to mention the cover, the concept brilliantly designed. My book was on my coffee table and the lights from the television changed the colour of the leaves on the front cover, the leaves twinkled with different shades, it was magical just as its content is.

This novel will take the reader to a place of mystical magic with a dash of myth and I highly recommend it. Evie Woods lives Ireland and has created the most amazing book using her magical mind. It’s an intricately woven story with two vivid timelines that will burrow its way into your heart.

LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!!

Finally Completed reading the book by @evie.gaughan !

In the start, I felt a little disconnection between the story.
The Story revolves around Opaline, Martha,Henry, Madame Bowden who are struggling to find their purpose of life.
Martha works for Madam Bowden post running from a failed marriage and who aims to study to get a degree; living a better life.
Soon she comes across in connection with a PhD student Henry and the rest of the story is about to unfold between the future and past connecting Madam Bowden's House.
Opaline, who suffers mental and physical harassment from his Brother Lyndon; discovers the writing of EJB.
As you progress towards the end, what a twist of finding a true treasure of a lost bookshop.
The books connect the past and present story together to discover a lost bookshop.
If you are a slow reader, definately you should add this book to your TBR - The Lost Bookshop !
