Idiot Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 494 ratings

The Idiot (Russian: Идио́т, Idiot) is a novel written by the 19th-century Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The Idiot, alongside some of Dostoyevsky's other works, is often considered one of the most brilliant literary achievements of the "Golden Age" of Russian literature.
The 26-year-old Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin returns to Russia after spending several years at a Swiss sanatorium. Scorned by the society of St. Petersburg for his trusting nature and naiveté, he finds himself at the center of a struggle between a beautiful kept woman and a virtuous and pretty young girl, both of whom win his affection. Unfortunately, Myshkin's very goodness precipitates disaster, leaving the impression that, in a world obsessed with money, power, and sexual conquest, a sanatorium may be the only place for a saint. Review

“Nothing is outside Dostoevsky’s province. . . . Out of Shakespeare there is no more exciting reading.” —Virginia Woolf

From the Inside Flap

Russia from a sanitarium in Switzerland, the Christ-like epileptic Prince Myshkin finds himself enmeshed in a tangle of love, torn between two womenthe notorious kept woman Nastasya and the pure Aglaiaboth involved, in turn, with the corrupt, money-hungry Ganya. In the end, Myshkins honesty, goodness, and integrity are shown to be unequal to the moral emptiness of those around him. In her revision of the Garnett translation, Anna Brailovsky has corrected inaccuracies wrought by Garnetts drastic anglicization of the novel, restoring as much as possible the syntactical structure of the original.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (/ˌdɒstəˈjɛfski, ˌdʌs-/; Russian: Фёдор Миха́йлович Достое́вский; IPA: [ˈfʲɵdər mʲɪˈxajləvʲɪtɕ dəstɐˈjɛfskʲɪj]; 11 November 1821 – 9 February 1881), sometimes transliterated Dostoevsky, was a Russian novelist, short story writer, essayist, journalist and philosopher. Dostoyevsky's literary works explore human psychology in the troubled political, social, and spiritual atmosphere of 19th-century Russia. Many of his works are marked by a preoccupation with Christianity, explored through the prism of the individual confronted with life's hardships and beauty.

He began writing in his 20s, and his first novel, Poor Folk, was published in 1846 when he was 25. His major works include Crime and Punishment (1866), The Idiot (1869), Demons (1872) and The Brothers Karamazov (1880). His output consists of 11 novels, three novellas, 17 short novels and numerous other works. Many literary critics rate him as one of the greatest psychologists in world literature. His 1864 novella Notes from Underground is considered to be one of the first works of existentialist literature.

Born in Moscow in 1821, Dostoyevsky was introduced to literature at an early age through fairy tales and legends, and through books by Russian and foreign authors. His mother died in 1837, when he was 15, and around the same time he left school to enter the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute. After graduating, he worked as an engineer and briefly enjoyed a lavish lifestyle, translating books to earn extra money. In the mid-1840s he wrote his first novel, Poor Folk, which gained him entry into St. Petersburg's literary circles.

In the following years, Dostoyevsky worked as a journalist, publishing and editing several magazines of his own and later A Writer's Diary, a collection of his writings. He began to travel around western Europe and developed a gambling addiction, which led to financial hardship. For a time, he had to beg for money, but he eventually became one of the most widely read and highly regarded Russian writers. His books have been translated into more than 170 languages. Dostoyevsky influenced a multitude of writers and philosophers, from Anton Chekhov and Ernest Hemingway to Friedrich Nietzsche and Jean-Paul Sartre.

The idiot is a fantastic novel. However, this edition is a lazily done scaneprint by a publisher called Odin's Library Classics. The fact that Odin's Library Classics published this rag is not immediately apparent however because the publisher did not place its name on the spine, and the imprint page simply says Works of the Public Domain at the top, in print that looks like it was emblazoned by a low ink home printer. This style of print is consistent throughout with 8 point font .5 spacing and horrendous margins. The entire volume is disgustingly printed and looks like it was formatted over the course of about 5 minutes by someone who had never seen a properly formatted book before. This book looks like someone found a pdf of a public domain translation of The Idiot, printed it out on their home printer and then bought some generic covers off the internet to bind them in. However the binding is still loads better than TAN Books is. If you want a good edition of The Idiot buy the Vintage Classics version, it has a fantastic translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky and, as a bonus, is formatted like a real book.

Still a classic after all these years but dreadfully long and you need a small notepad to keep all the characters straight.

The “Idiot” is a great book, and if you’re looking for a really well developed story of just regular Russians trying to figure things out, in a sense this is your book.

Mind blowing and very informative.
Quite deep and makes you think about different types of people born in certain classes. How inhuman they can become through life experiences nobody wants to be looked down on or be seen as common. They think that having a good education makes them better or cleverer than others. Ignorant is bliss.
