Splintered Magic: A Paranormal Women's Urban Fantasy Fiction Novel (Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,569 ratings

Brigid Donovan is down on her luck. Her husband dumped her for the biggest stereotype around, his secretary, and her family mansion is a decaying wreck. All she wants is to get it restored, enjoy the peace and quiet of living in eight hundred acres of primordial forest, and rebuild her life.

Fate seems to be against her. First, her cat starts to speak to her. And what does he say? He's not what he seems to be—seriously? Like a talking cat is normal. He does tell her that she's the great-granddaughter of a fae lord, and very powerful. Only, that doesn't seem right. Where's her magic? Why didn't her family tell her?

Things aren't as picture perfect as they seem in her hometown of Kilchis, Oregon. In fact, they haven't been for a long time. For one thing, her restoration team is a pack of werewolves, and her new bestie is a witch. What's going on? Brigid has to find out fast or she could lose it all—her mind, her magic, and her life.

📚 Book Review 📚
Splintered Magic
By
Jilleen Dolbeare
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is book one in the Splintered Magic paranormal fantasy series. Bridgid Donovan has recently divorced her cheating husband, yes with his younger secretary. After her sizable divorce settlement, Bridgid decides to return to the house she grew up in, an old Victoria mansion in desperate need of repair and located on eight hundred acres of land to start her new life. When moving into the house, Bridgid unexpectedly discovers a rather large cat living there, and to her astonishment, the cat can talk to her. The cat, known as Mr. Mittens and is no ordinary cat, informs Bridgid that she is the great-granddaughter of a fae lord, and her magic is very powerful. Bridgid was clueless and had no idea, no one ever told her. Suddenly Bridgid is deeply rooted in a world of magic and magical beings, some of which want to steal her magic powers. Who can she trust and how can she learn to use her powers to defend herself against the evil entities trying to destroy her?
I found this book highly entertaining and enjoyed it immensely. The character development was fantastic, as the FMC is thrown into a magical world she didn’t know existed and has to navigate the pitfalls of her new life. The relationships between the characters were inventive, clever, and original. The story was fast-paced, suspenseful, emotional, and had a twist of romance. The climax to the story will definitely make you come back for more. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling magical fantasy to read.

Such an interesting book all the way through and then you made it a cliffhanger? Why? The boos you did with Heather weren’t like that. A series should have an absolute ending with each book. Would have given 5 stars if you hadn’t ended it this way!

Following her divorce, Brigid returns to her family’s home to restore the place to its original glory. Not long after arriving back, she learns that she has a legacy of magic, and that she’s not the only one in town with supernatural gifts. In fact, some of them covet her magic, and it’s a race for her to recover all of her magic before it’s stolen from her. I really liked the premise of this story. Brigid is forty-two, so she’s not typical of characters in these types of stories learning they have magic. She’s back in her hometown, along with her high school sweetheart, giving the potential for second chance love. There are witches and a wolf shifter pack, so there’s an opportunity to really world-build. Unfortunately, the story falls short. It could really use more details. Brigid’s actions are attributed learned behaviors from treatment from her ex, but he isn’t even named. She names her best friend who still works for him at the company Brigid helped him build, but that business isn’t even explained. She apparently fought hard for half of their marital assets. They must have been considerable for her to have the amount of money that it would cost to not only buy her childhood home, but all of the original property surrounding it, AND to fund the extensive restoration. What business did they have to have so much money? Then she spends time working on a business idea similar to the one she started with her ex. At first I thought the detail of the kind of business was deliberately withheld for purposes of the story, but that never became clear. Her high school sweetheart Gabe is back in town too. Apparently they had a great teen relationship, but we’re never told why they broke up. Did they just go their separate ways when college happened? It’s vague, and even if it’s not important to the plot, it’s a detail that would make the story more interesting. As a character, Brigid is naive. It’s odd that she’s so accepting of magic. The cat (her “protector”) and others warn her that she’s in danger, but she doesn’t take those warnings seriously. There are details about her heritage that the long-lived cat doesn’t offer and Brigid doesn’t ask. I figured out who the “bad guy” was pretty early, and it was almost ridiculous how trusting Brigid was of everyone, considering the warnings she’d been given. When she finally DOES start to figure things out, she shows her hand to the bad guys. She takes unnecessary risks; she’s been warned not to go around by herself, but does it even on the cusp of the final confrontation. Then the book just ends. This book’s problem not only wasn’t resolved, but the climax only brings about more problems to add to the mix. I was actually surprised to get to the end of a paragraph and then read “The End.” It was very frustrating. There were some editing errors, like misplaced commas, and using “too” for “to” (that actually happened several times). I’m very surprised by all the glowing 4- and 5-star reviews. While the premise of the book was promising, the lack of details and development of the story was disappointing, not to mention that the book was more than just a cliffhanger - it was unfinished. I can only assume that the rest of the series will be more of the same.

I liked this book, but found it too short. I love the cat and was glad that the MFC isn't a sweet young thing getting hot and helpless over the good looking MMC - it took a sneaky love potion for that! I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Talk about getting things done ⚡️

Brigid is finally moving into her childhood home and family estate and everything is coming up roses. Until one of the men working at her home falls victim to a tragic accident, that is.

As if that wasn’t enough, Brigid is coming to terms with discovering that her cat, Mr. Mittens, is her magical protector and that she has a whole, long family history of magic that has now become her responsibility. Throw in a budding romance with her teenage sweetheart and the revelation that someone is trying to steal her home and her magic, and you have one heck of a mystery to solve.

This book delves deeper into the magical world around Brigid and her friends, strengthening an unusual but engaging take on magic. The cast of characters that Jilleen has created are both funny, challenging and entertaining, even when the chips are down and the world is dark.

Its small town urban fantasy at its finest and the best thing is, the next book is already waiting for me 😍
