The records mirror the information found in the theatre's programmes. By searching the database you can see details of all works, productions and the first night of each run of performances. For many seasons there are numerous or all performances available.
Also online are selected performances by the ballet and opera companies on tour, and in the Linbury Theatre and the Clore Studio at the Royal Opera House. Some performances by visiting companies, such as the Bolshoi Ballet, on the main stage at the Royal Opera House have been catalogued. These performances date from after 2000.
Records are divided into three levels: work, production, and performance.
- Work: This record concerns the elements that never change about a work: creators, genre, premiere, and literary source (where appropriate). For an opera, the principal creators are the composer and librettist; for a ballet, the choreographer and composer.
- Production: This level concerns the team that put the work on stage: producer, director, set and costume designers, lighting designer. One work may have many productions, and they are distinguished by the year of their premiere, shown after the title, for example, The Sleeping Beauty (1946).
- Performance: This record concerns the people on stage or in the orchestra pit who perform a certain production of the work on a particular day.
Work and production records show the company name at the time of the premiere.
Performance records show the name at the time of the performance.
