A recent study published in Science has revealed a troubling connection: after the loss of bat populations due to disease, farmers ramped up their pesticide use, resulting in a 7.9% increase in infant mortality rates. (Frank, 2024) This adds to the growing body of evidence showing the devastating effects of pesticides on public health and well-being. To break this cycle, it’s crucial that we move from conventional agriculture that relies heavily on pesticides to organic, to sustainable agriculture—free from synthetic and chemical pesticides—that provides healthy food, protects biodiversity, restores ecosystems, and ensures the future of our grandkids. To address this, we are developing large-scale sustainable agriculture methods that will help drive the transition towards a more resilient food system. Did you know that soil degradation costs the EU 50 billion EUR each year? Overuse of mineral fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, monocropping, poor irrigation practices, and heavy tillage all contribute to the problem. The Global Environment Facility reminds us that 24 billion tons of fertile soil is being lost per year, largely due to unsustainable agriculture practices. If this trend continues, we could degrade 95% of the Earth’s land areas by 2050. ➡️ “But why should I care?” Soil degradation affects crops and the quality and health of your food. Only healthy soils produce healthy food. ➡️ ”OK, but what are you doing about it?” On our 3,700 ha organically certified farm we’re implementing the practice of multi-year crop rotation, a strategy designed to enrich the soil, reduce weeds, pests, and diseases as well as to increase overall farm productivity. ➡️ “And what can I do?” Choose organic and sustainably produced products, educate yourself about soil health, and advocate for sustainable farming practices. Insightful piece in the Financial Times by Alan Beattie. Your observation that we still have much to do to internalize the external costs of carbon emissions is spot on. However, it’s crucial to broaden this focus beyond just carbon. While carbon and GHG emissions are critical, farming has an even greater environmental impact. From water pollution and soil degradation to biodiversity loss, agriculture's footprint is vast and often underestimated. That’s why we’re supporting Hestia (University of Oxford) project, which aims to establish a global standard for agricultural sustainability. The goal is for every food product to carry a sustainability score—similar to the Nutri-Score.
