We are thrilled to share a remarkable success story from AniCura Jaén Norte Clínica Veterinaria. A few weeks ago, our team received an urgent case of a 45-day-old Iberian lynx cub suffering from severe head trauma caused by a bite from its mother, resulting in a crushed and fractured skull.  Given the grave neurological symptoms, our experts conducted a CT scan that revealed the extent of the cranial damage, which was life-threatening for this critically endangered species.  In collaboration with AniCura Valencia Sur Hospital Veterinario, we performed an unprecedented surgery on an animal of this age and weight (just 1 kg). The operation involved reconstructing the skull using a semi-flexible prosthesis made of polypropylene and titanium. This innovative approach aimed to ensure a good quality of life for the lynx cub.  This intervention showcases our commitment to advanced veterinary care and our dedication to preserving endangered species. During the last ISFM Congress in Malta, Lisen Schortz presented the results of her last research at the University of Lincoln. This study delves into the types of incidents that occur in feline patients and aims to identify and underpin improvement measures specific to feline patients, such as implementing checklists for safe anaesthesia.  This research displays that feline patient pose unique challenges:  - Illness Concealment: Cats are experts at hiding their illnesses.  - Medication Sensitivity: They can be more vulnerable to certain medications.  - Vulnerabilities: Their small size makes them more susceptible to issues like hypothermia and anaesthetic ventilation pressure changes.  This PhD study is funded by AniCura and ethically approved by the University of Lincoln, School of Health and Social Care ethics committee and its findings will help enhance the safety of feline veterinary care, benefiting our feline patients.  Congratulations Lisen Schortz! Senior pets do have specific needs ❗ Feline Diabetes Mellitus prevalence rises to 1%. This increase is likely linked to the growing number of overweight cats and the ageing feline population. While obesity remains a significant risk factor, the prevalence of diabetes surges in cats aged 6 years and older. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are imperative to prevent severe complications. Unfortunately, the impact of untreated diabetes is severe, with up to 30% of diagnosed cats facing euthanasia within a year. World Oral Health Day is celebrated every year on March 20th to spread awareness about oral health and its intricate link with overall health. Most dogs and cats will suffer from oral disease during their lives. Although reversible in the early stages, the consequences as it progresses are significant and without veterinary intervention, pain and tooth loss are inevitable. Dental procedures are very commonly performed in small animal general practice. For safe and effective dental treatment in dogs and cats, general anaesthesia is usually required. However, this can cause anxiety for the pet owner as these pets are often older and can have comorbidities compared to those undergoing other elective procedures. In dental procedures, general considerations for safe general anaesthesia are universally applicable. One crucial aspect is ensuring secure endovenous access for all patients before anaesthesia induction. This precaution, regardless of the expected procedure duration, is vital to handle any emergencies that may arise during the process.
