Extreme heatwaves during the summer months are becoming more frequent and severe across Europe, demanding urgent attention from urban planners. Sweco's recent Urban Insight report highlights the strategies adopted by 24 European cities to enhance community resilience. Despite projections showing a doubling of heatwave days by the year 2100, many cities lack dedicated adaptation teams, particularly in Northern Europe. The European Environment Agency (EEA) suggests a combination of nature-based solutions, such as urban forests and green roofs, alongside critical infrastructure changes. Collaborative governance, innovation and community empowerment are essential for effective adaptation. By prioritising equitable resource distribution and detailed data collection, cities can better protect vulnerable communities. More than 15 million visitors are expected to travel to Paris during the 2024 Olympics over the next few weeks. The public transport system will play a crucial role in getting people between venues, airports, train stations and hotels in an efficient manner. The Grand Paris Express is the largest metro project in Europe, adding 200 kilometres of new underground lines and 68 new stations to support urban expansion, reduce traffic and improve air quality. In 2016, Sweco was commissioned by Société du Grand Paris for the project management and detailed civil design of Paris' Line 17 metro extension. The new 21-kilometre line, connecting Le Bourget and Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airports, will feature five stations and significantly improve transportation in northern Paris. Scheduled to enter service between 2026-2030, this project is executed by a consortium led by Sweco Belgium. Finnish energy company Helen has selected Sweco as its EPCM partner to build Helsinki’s first green hydrogen production plant. Production of hydrogen is set to start in 2026, with the aim of supplying the heavy-duty transport sector. The excess heat from production will be utilised in Helen’s district heating network and is expected to increase the plant’s energy efficiency to more than 90%. Helen is one of Finland’s largest energy operators and has worked with Sweco for many years. Sweco has taken the role of Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) partner in several heating and cooling plant projects. “Sweco has extensive experience of working as an advisor and EPCM partner to Helen and we have joint operating methods in place for smooth project delivery. This successful cooperation is now being extended to include Sweco’s considerable expertise in hydrogen, gained from numerous projects in Finland and also across Europe,” says Thomas Hietto, President of Sweco Finland. As the EPCM partner, Sweco will oversee the planning of the project’s regional infrastructure, including architectural, structural engineering and plant design, as well as project management, procurement and site management services. “The 3H2 project is the first of its kind in the world and combines four different sectors: electricity, transport, heating, and hydrogen, and the flexibility between them,” says Sari Mannonen, SVP, New Business and Hydrogen at Helen. “For Helen, hydrogen is an essential part of our new strategy, and we are committed to investing in the development of the hydrogen business.” Learn more about this groundbreaking project and Sweco's role in green hydrogen initiatives in Finland and across Europe: https://lnkd.in/dCQEYikK #SwecoGroup #TransformingSocietyTogether Photo credit: Arkkitehtitoimisto Virkkunen & Co

How can cities protect inhabitants from the increasing number of heatwaves? Sweco’s analysis of 24 European cities highlights the urgent need for heat wave mitigation and resilience.  Europe, the continent where warming is accelerating at the most alarming rate, faces a critical challenge: urban heatwave adaptation. A recent Sweco study shows that adaptation policies are lagging, especially when it comes to safeguarding vulnerable populations. During the scorching summer of 2022, more than 61,000 lives were lost due to record-breaking heatwaves. In 2023, there was a record number of days with “extreme heat stress.” The risks extend beyond public health and have an impact on infrastructure and economic productivity. There is a need to take action in order to enhance resilience in cities. This can be achieved through digital innovation, nature-based solutions, green-blue infrastructure and through designing high-performing buildings.
