I joined the UN over 20 years ago to make a difference in the world, building on my previous work for ECHO and for NGOs such as the IRC. Since then, I have worked in displacement settings in 10 countries across three continents, from Iceland in the north to Uganda in the south. My father was a war refugee generously hosted by Sweden when Helsinki was under heavy bombardment, I am grateful to be able to give back by helping the refugees of this century. Forever on the move, we have been blessed with giving birth to one daughter per continent - in Colombo, Addis Ababa and Helsinki. Having started as a journalist I have kept the curiosity, creativity and yearning to understand the world around. I have published a number of articles and essays and my latest book about aid work in Ethiopia (När det röda dammet lagt sig) was published in my mother tongue in March 2014.

What do you do if your organization's message isn't effectively communicated through storytelling?
Identification is a key aspect of being able to connect with an audience. I often refer to my own family history when I discuss displacement issues. I think we are so very prone in Europe to forget that the refugee convention initially was meant for European refugees in Europe- it was our own failings to protect each other that led to the need for international law. My grandmother had to flee Poland as a child, and my father had to flee from Finland. Both were what we today would call “war refugees “. As the song goes: I am a product of their sacrifice. I am now in a position to give back and to try and protect others forced to flee.

What do you do if your innovative fundraising techniques are met with resistance?
A technique I have used is to listen to others ideas and fears before engaging in a discussion on innovative fundraising. You have to be clear that innovation always involves the risk of failing. Ask for support and adapt strategies while maintaining the core idea on how to innovate. It is not so much about “educating others “. It is more about acknowledging and sharing the risks, provide evidence of how and when these strategies have succeeded in other context. And most importantly: Accept that you do not have all the answers and invite others to co-create.
