Welcome to my profile!
I'm Elena, passionate about helping PhDs kickstart fulfilling careers outside of academia, and connect them with industry relevant positions.
During my PhD journey, I realized that many PhDs face challenges transitioning from academia to industry. This difficulty often arises due to a lack of knowledge about potential positions, how to craft a resume for the industry, and prepare effectively for a job in that sector.
I've experienced this struggle firsthand. While pursuing my PhD, I felt lost. I knew that I no longer wanted to work in the lab; instead, I wanted to work with people, as that's where my passion lies. I went on my own discovery journey on "what is next". I focused on the things I loved doing and thought of possible career options- after I identified what is next- I started working toward it by building a network in that area.
Who am I, and how did I get here?
I recently graduated with a PhD in Medical Sciences from the Karolinska Institutet in beautiful Stockholm.
As a Co-Founder and CEO of Alma.me my vision is to bridge the gap between academia and industry by providing information to help PhDs understand the array of opportunities after completing their studies and recognise the value of their skills beyond academia.
If you are a PhD-student, Postdoc or tenure and you want to make the transition into industry drop me a DM. I answer every single one!

How can you find alternative career paths as a PhD graduate?
Identify your transferable skills- PhDs have many of these! From critical thinking, problem solving and my favorite skills in today's fast evolving world the ability to learn and curiosity! Transferable make you employable in various industries and roles. As a PhD-student you do various tasks, from presenting to analysis, writing to some administrative tasks. Do an experiment and observe when you are in your “flow”, and what is the type of task. Reflect a little on your daily work day- it can give you a deep insight about your strengths. Things that make you feel in the "flow" are often the ones we naturally thrive in. Now align your strengths and skills in a next step to find suitable career paths.

How can you find alternative career paths as a PhD graduate?
In a first step, I would identify my interests, strengths and skills. Then try to narrow down roles that match these. In a next step I can recommend conducting informational interviews to 1) understand more about a specific role 2) expand your network. Most PhDs lack a network outside of academia, and I would recommend start building it as early as possible. This can be done 1) online via LinkedIn by creating content and/or engaging with industry relevant people 2) in real life by going to networking events - often universities offer these. My advice - be proactive in building your unique career path! There is a lot of information here on LinkedIn, and most universities have careers centers (I known most don’t use these, or are unaware)

How can you support early career professionals in their career transitions?
As a first step I find it useful to look at the intersection between interests and skills and then match these with potential roles. To get to know more about a role, I find informational interviews are very helpful. People working in specific roles can be found on LinkedIn. In my experience most people are willing to spare 15 min of their time.

My PhD studies focus on tissue resident memory T cells (TRM) in the skin, in both health and disease. In psoriasis, TRMs are implicated in the side specific recurrence of skin lesions after withdrawal of treatment. During my PhD studies I am trying to understand if there is a specific subset of T cells in the skin that drives the recurrence.
