    DDT and various herbicides were discovered in birds and other animals. Paper-mills along the Swedish east coast let out tremendous amounts of BOD in the Baltic sea causing fish to die from lack of Oxygen. Fertilizers from agriculture caused rivers, lakes and the Baltic sea to overflow with algies - farmers were urged to stop surplus fertilizer supply. Several sulfide mines showed Arsenik leakage.
    Studies gave substance to the first UN environmental conference in Stockholm 1972.
