🚨 AI is not a silver bullet or scapegoat for construction safety. Recently I had an incredible opportunity to speak at The Singapore Contractors Association Ltd (SCAL) Annual Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Campaign 2024. The event was graced by Guest of Honour Dr. Tan See Leng, Ministry of Manpower Minister for Manpower, and industry leaders like Mr. Silas Sng (Commissioner of Workplace Safety and Health at MOM), alongside nearly 500 industry professionals. I talked about how AI can enhance mandated video surveillance systems for all projects above $5M (especially with the recent mandate by MOM for such systems https://lnkd.in/grT9xaRQ), providing actionable insights for better decision-making. In my speech, I highlighted the following points: ✅ Steps and best practices companies can take to ensure successful implementation and adoption of AI systems ✅ How various parties (Contractors, Consultants, Regulators, Vendors, Associations) should collaborate to ensure the improvement of safety culture, rather than using the system for iron-fist enforcement, which can lead to negative consequences ✅ How to evaluate the effectiveness of AI systems ✅ Common myths, constraints, limitations, and overselling to watch out for when talking to vendors At Ailytics, we are committed to providing realistic, reliable, and reasonable solutions to our customers, which sometimes means saying no to certain requests or projects. Over the past year, we have taken over an increasing number of projects from various other AI vendors, often involving difficult conversations that set back industry adoption and trust in AI systems. Encouraged to see improvements in the construction industry's workplace safety. Fatal and major injury rate has fallen from 34.9 per 100,000 workers in 2022 to 31.9 per 100,000 workers in 2023. And we will do more. We start by “Design Right”. Through Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA), we are raising labour productivity and creating a safer worksite environment. We will also “Build Right” through adopting digital technologies in the worksite. Construction firms such as Zheng Keng Engineering & Construction have already started deploying automation and AI-enabled video surveillance technologies. These systems can alert supervisors on potentially high risk activities and for the teams to take timely actions to avoid accidents. HDB is leading the way and has piloted this technology at selected worksites a few years ago. Early result has been encouraging. Since January 2023, HDB has required all contractors tendering for new housing projects to adopt such technologies. From 1 June 2024, Video Surveillance System (VSS) will be mandatory at construction sites with a project value of $5 million and above. This will raise workplace safety standards across many more worksites. For construction firms that have not done so, they may wish to tap on the Building and Construction Authority’s Productivity Solutions Grant (or PSG) that provides up to 50% co-funding support to eligible SMEs for pre-approved solutions, including VSS with AI. 📽 This video marks the launch of the 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗦𝗛 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, which continues its focus on “𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴”. It features senior representatives from the tripartite partners, who have come together to amplify the call to strengthen the culture of WSH excellence and voice their support for reporting unsafe workplace situations. The Campaign also calls for a time of reflection, as we look upon Singapore’s significant WSH improvements over the years. On this date 20 years ago, the tragic Nicoll Highway collapse claimed the lives of four workers. A total of 83 workers lost their lives that year resulting in the workplace fatality rate of 4.9 per 100,000 workers for 2004.
