Investing in climate-friendly food tech and alternative protein in Asia Pacific.
About us
We back Asia's food tech founders building a better climate future. With over a quarter of global emissions coming from food and dominated by animal agriculture and the Asia Pacific region, our fund was setup with impact in mind. If your project moves us to a better food system for people, animals and planet, let's talk. We invest in these climate-friendly food technologies: - Plant based - Cultivated - Biomass fermentation - Precision fermentation - Molecular farming - Climate agritech We focus primarily on founding, pre-seed and seed stages. Better Bite Ventures was created by Michal Klar and Simon Newstead, two Asia Pacific based operators turned impact investors. They have combined 20 years living plant-based and sector expertise including running the Future Food Now newsletter and Vegan Startup podcast, and a track record of investing and venture building in food and tech. Our investment process is simple and terms are transparent and founder-friendly. If you are a founder and would like to chat, please get in touch!

Good overview of the emerging bean-less coffee ☕ market - featuring our portfolio startup Prefer | bean-free coffee and some thoughts from yours truly: “Coffee is one of the foods with the highest carbon footprint per kg and water footprint. At the same time, coffee as a crop is threatened by climate change,” Michal Klar tells Just Drinks. “We believe food companies sourcing and selling coffee will be looking for more stable supply [chains], with more predictable prices. Bean-less coffee might meet that need.” Thanks Fiona Holland for coverage, nice work. More:

A big thank you to Max Harding who has spent the last few months interning with us and done a wonderful job 👏 Max's research in his PhD at The University of Queensland Institute for Molecular Bioscience is into platforms to express new recombinant proteins within plants. He's taken his passion for plant biology, to several projects over the past months at Better Bite - to help delve into the science of new innovations that could have a real impact, do literature reviews, market analyses and more - and gain practical experience working on the funding and business side of the industry in the process. It's been a blast to work together and looking forward to collaborate even more in the future Max! And all the best with finishing up your research and PhD!

Announcing new investment: AgriG8, reducing climate impact of rice 🌾 “Decarbonising rice production is one of the focus areas for our investments,” said Michal Klar, founding partner at Better Bite Ventures. “Rice is one of the top sources of food and agricultural emissions in Asia-Pacific. We believe AgriG8 will help to accelerate deployment of methane-reducing farming practices, using their unique set of tech and finance tools.” Welcome David C.Y. Chen and the team - thanks for your trust, great to have you as part of Better Bite family. More at Green Queen Media: https://lnkd.in/gckm6WEj

We're thrilled to welcome Eshan Samaranayake - new member of the team and our first analyst! 👋 Based in Hong Kong with a biotech background, startup experience and a passion for how the industry can solve major problems in our food system, Eshan's a great match with our Better Bite Ventures mission. He also writes the Better Bioeconomy, which is a great read to keep up to date on the latest. With two weeks since he joined, we took a moment to ask him some questions about his background (spoiler alert, it includes dragons) and what he's been up to so far 🐲 https://lnkd.in/dU-k6RHx Great you're on board! Today is Earth Day 🌏 Let's do some climate math: 👉 25-30% global greenhouse gas emissions come from food and agriculture 👉 44% of those are from Asia Pacific region 👉 TOP5 contributors in Asia*: 1. Meat & dairy 🐄 2. Rice 🌾 3. Fertiliser 🌱 4. Deforestation (palm oil) 🌴 5. Food waste 🗑️ That's why at Better Bite Ventures we support startups decarbonising these key sectors in APAC. We've recently made some new investments in impactful companies, cannot wait to share more soon. If you are a founder working on this, happy to chat. (*sources in comments)

We recently invited our portfolio founders to a workshop on building an effective pitch deck. And we asked Alex and Mark from Deck Doctors to run it. They are one of the best experts I came across when it comes crafting a startup narrative and transforming it into a pitch deck that converts. As many founders know, it is not enough to have a great team, great idea and great product. You also need to be able to weave those in a clear and compelling story. And then distill it into what is a default way to deliver a story in startup/VC world: a pitch deck. But VCs are looking at hundreds of pitch decks. How to make your stand out? It is an art and a science. It is far more than just a pretty design. Deck Doctors have a great framework and bunch of practical, tested tactics that can help to get attention of investors. Highly recommend all founders to check their resources (some good stuff on their YouTube channel) or work with them directly on your pitch deck: https://www.deckdocs.com/
