The Hidden Wisdom in Crisis Management As I headed home after yesterday’s “Conflict and Crisis Management” workshop, I reflected on our discussion on the customer-centric approach to crisis management. Leading the group through this actual participant’s case study discussion reminded us that our most valuable discoveries often come when we shift our perspective. It’s easy to focus solely on damage control during a crisis. But today’s discussion underscored that truly effective crisis management starts with empathy. It’s about understanding the emotions and concerns of those affected, resolving and communicating in a way that reassures and builds trust. When prioritising the customer’s experience, we don’t just manage the crisis—we transform it into an opportunity to strengthen relationships and build confidence. “Empathy begins with understanding from another person's perspective.” "In a crisis, your greatest strength is empathy." This approach isn't always straightforward. Returning into corporate speak or pure defence mode can be tempting in tense moments. But today, it reinforced my belief that effective crisis management is about bridging perspectives and walking the journey with those affected. A heartfelt thank you to all participants for your engaging participation, Alan Wong for the collaboration, Jim Giam, Cheryl T., and FirstCom Academy for assembling such an insightful group.
