🌏 ASEAN Startup Funding Hits Lowest Level Since 2017 in H1 2024 ➡️ The total funding amounted to $2.6 billion across 376 rounds, nearly half of what was recorded in H1 2023, following the peak of $14.8 billion in H2 2021. ➡️ Most countries in the region experienced declines in startup investments: Indonesia saw a 79% year-over-year decrease, Vietnam 93%, Malaysia 59%, and Thailand 58%. The Philippines were the exception, with a 118% increase in startup investments, reaching $165 million. ➡️ Despite a 29% decline, Singapore remains the regional leader with $1.9 billion in startup investments, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the regional total. ➡️ French investors were particularly active this semester, participating in 11 funding rounds, 9 of which were in Singapore. Key investments included Eurazeo in Insurtech Qoala (ID), Partech in Healthtech HD (TH), Seventure Partners in Biotech Allozymes (SG) and Peptobiotics (SG), and Shift4Good in Greentech Pyxis (SG). ➡️ The region also saw the creation of 13 new VC funds, 7 of which were in Singapore, totaling nearly $900 million, with over $600 million from Singaporean investors. ➡️ Additionally, ASEAN recorded 22 VC-backed startup exits, including 2 IPOs. Notably, Graphjet Technology (NASDAQ:GTI) from Malaysia, which specializes in producing graphite and graphene from agricultural waste, went public on Nasdaq. 👉 Read the full article (in FR): https://lnkd.in/gy3CJm4M Thanks to Arnaud Bonzom for his insights | Raphaël Badr Matthys Lambert Direction générale du Trésor (French Treasury) La French Tech Singapore LA FRENCH TECH INDONESIA La French Tech Malaysia La French Tech Manila La French Tech Bangkok La French Tech Vietnam

Southeast Asia's Growing Importance in the Global Semiconductor Industry ➡ Asia is a major player in the global semiconductor industry, accounting for nearly 60% of global exports and half of the world's added value. Although Northeast Asia has traditionally dominated the sector, Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines are rapidly emerging as key contributors. Together, they now form the second-largest exporting bloc, accounting for 23% of global semiconductor exports. ➡ The pandemic, then the U.S. CHIPS Act have led to a trend of "de-risking" from China, benefiting the ASEAN region. With over $40 billion in FDI pledged since 2021, the region's relative geopolitical neutrality and competitiveness have made it an increasingly attractive destination for global semiconductor companies such as STMicroelectronics, Intel Foundry, Micron Technology, GlobalFoundries, or NXP Semiconductors. The governments of Malaysia and Vietnam have or will unveil new national strategies in 2024 to enhance their attractiveness. Thailand is also working to catch up and has started developing its new strategy. ➡ However, beyond Singapore, which boasts several high-value-added manufacturing and R&D centers, the rest of the region still heavily relies on assembly, testing, and packaging (ATP) activities with low added value. To upgrade and remain competitive, the region must address structural challenges related to human capital, infrastructure, electricity supply, and intellectual property protection. Learn more about Southeast Asia's role in the global semiconductor industry with our latest Horizon ASEAN report (in French), co-authored with Raphaël Badr. 🎓⭐ Southeast Asia's Got Talent, But Can It Keep It? ➡️ Southeast Asia (SEA) has significantly expanded higher education accessibility, rising from 5% in 1970 to 34% in 2018. With nearly half of graduates specializing in STEM or ICT fields, surpassing the global average, the region shows potential to climb the global value chain. ➡️ However, limited university options drive over 350,000 SEA students to pursue education abroad, with two-thirds opting for English-speaking or North Asian countries, underscoring ongoing challenges in local higher education standards and relevance. ➡️ Vast majority of highly skilled professionals in SEA would prefer migrating to high-income economies for better opportunities if given the choice, with over three-quarters opting to live or work outside the SEA region; a trend supported by the historical increase in qualified emigrants from SEA to OECD countries. ➡️ The region must tackle the underlying causes of brain drain by improving domestic job markets, enhancing educational quality, and cultivating an environment that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship. 📰 Will Singapore maintain its position as a digital powerhouse amid increasing regional competition and cybersecurity risks?   ➡️ Singapore has become a top choice for data center (DC) installations in Asia, with its power expected to exceed 1 GW this year, accounting for 60% of Southeast Asia's capacity, and an estimated market volume of $4 billion (0.8% of GDP). OVHcloud, French DC operator, operates two complexes there.   ➡️ In response to the significant energy consumption of DC (7% of the country's electricity consumption), IMDA suspended their construction between 2019 and 2022. This slowdown has benefited Malaysia, which is expected to increase its capacity sevenfold over the next five years (1.2 GW under construction or planned), showing the highest growth in the region.   ➡️ Partnering with US hyperscalers, Singapore aims to make digital technology the core of its citizens' lives ("Digital to the Core"). The country has already migrated 70% of eligible government systems to the cloud, with public cloud services experiencing spectacular growth and representing nearly half of the total ASEAN market.   ➡️ However, digital transformation, coupled with regional geopolitical tensions, is leading to an increase in cybersecurity risk. Singapore saw a fourfold increase in cyberattacks against its companies between 2021 and 2022. Similar trends were observed for Malaysia (+197%), Thailand (+63%), Indonesia (+46%), and the Philippines (+29%).   ➡️ ASEAN countries face complex challenges in fighting cyber threats, with the regional response still being defined. Strengthening legislative and regulatory frameworks is evident, but differences in national preparedness levels and the absence of harmonized standards remain significant obstacles. The lack of resources and the prevalence of organized crime in some countries slow down the implementation of resilience against cyber threats.   👇 Read the 44th edition of “Horizon ASEAN” in French Direction générale du Trésor (French Treasury) La French Tech Singapore

🇨🇳 Is China Dominating ASEAN’s $139 Billion E-commerce Market? ➡️ China has been the ASEAN's top trading partner since 2009, and the ASEAN has held the same position for China since 2019. With China's domestic market maturing and facing regulatory changes, Chinese tech giants like Alibaba Group, Tencent, then ByteDance increasingly turned their focus to the ASEAN region since the 2010s. ➡️ Southeast Asia's large, connected, and young population, coupled with its emerging middle class, makes it an attractive market for Chinese tech companies. TikTok, owned by ByteDance, is particularly popular in the region, with nearly half of Southeast Asia's population using the app monthly. ➡️ Chinese tech companies are not only expanding their own digital initiatives in ASEAN but also investing in regional startups: the four main players in e-commerce in the region are either Chinese (TikTok Shop), fully controlled (Lazada), or partially controlled by a Chinese company (GoTo Group/Tokopedia and Shopee). They are also actively involved in logistics (Ninja Van and PT. Global Jet Express (J&T Express)) and fintech (DANA Indonesia, Mynt, Aspire and Flip). ➡️ The rise of a network of apps distributed by Chinese players presents a significant business opportunity for Chinese companies: around 80% of e-commerce volume in Southeast Asia is imported, with a significant portion coming from China (45% of products sold on Lazada in Thailand were of Chinese origin in 2019).
