ILAS Webinar: Artificial Intelligence - Uses in (Re)Insurance Industry and Legal Perspectives Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undeniably emerged as a transformative force, reshaping the landscape of software and data science. But how is AI optimally utilized in the (re)insurance industry? At the ILAS Virtual Webinar, we delved into this exciting topic, showcasing real-world examples of insurers and Insurtech pioneers who are already incorporating AI into their operations. We also explored the legal requirements and perspectives that govern the deployment of AI in the (re)insurance industry. The webinar kicked off with an insightful presentation from Dr. Iain Willis, Research Director at Gallagher Research Centre. Dr. Willis highlighted how AI is providing benefits across all steps, from product development and marketing to risk selection and pricing, customer service, and claims management (including fraud detection). He also showcased innovative Insurtech companies offering elegant, efficient, and zero-paperwork solutions for health, motor vehicle, and commercial insurance. Our second speaker, Dr. David Wood, Head of Software at JBA Risk Management, shared his experience using AI for flood risk modelling. Dr. Wood took us through the incredible ways JBA is leveraging AI for applications such as flood defence identification, automated quality control, flood mapping, and flood event set generation. Notably, JBA is among the first to integrate large language models into their business. The final speaker of the day was Norvin Chan, Managing Associate at Osborne Clarke, Singapore. Norvin, a rare technology lawyer who is also a programmer, presented the challenges and legal perspectives of adopting AI in the financial sector. This webinar provided a comprehensive overview of how AI is revolutionizing the (re)insurance industry and the legal considerations that come with it. As of 1 June 2024, all construction sites in Singapore with a contract value of SGD 5 million and above will be required to have a video surveillance system installed. This new regulation could significantly impact the litigation of common law work injury compensation claims.
