Welcome to Smart Recs – where we recommend books and films to enjoy in your free time! Our book recommendation for July is ‘The Secret Life of Data’ – a gripping read on the opportunities and risks in the age of #data surveillance and #GenerativeAI. The book explores how data can be used in unforeseen ways in a data-driven world, potentially affecting everything from our personal lives to political systems. ‘The Secret Life of Data’ urges us to consider the impact of our current digital frenzy and proposes "slow fixes" like creating effective regulations and fostering ethical practices. By being aware of how data can be used, we can play an active role in shaping how #technology influences our lives and the world at large! Shiploads of manual work? Not anymore! 🚢 As the government agency overseeing Singapore’s maritime trade, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) processes over 12,000 statutory certificate renewals every year, which translates to a mountain of documents with disparate layouts for MPA officers to sift through. To shorten processing time, AI Engineer Sheila Teo and her team participated in the AI Trailblazers initiative and built 2 products – DocuMind and DocuMatch. As part of the initiative, the MPA team attended a one-day product workshop and were provided access to a Generative AI cloud platform that complies with Government data classification requirements, as well as technical experts that offered valuable advice to better their solution. This reduced DocuMind’s time-to-market greatly. Using multi-modal Large Language Models (LLMs), DocuMind automatically extracts data from ship insurance documents of any format, while DocuMatch verifies the information extracted by DocuMind against MPA databases. The 2 products have an accuracy rate of >95%, compared to 30% using commercial Optical Character Recognition products. They have also cut turnaround time for statutory certificate renewals from 3 working days to 3 minutes, saving MPA 270 man-days per year compared with manual document verification! Sheila and her team plan to expand DocuMind’s use across MPA for larger-scale processes such as electronic port clearance, which involves about 190,000 applications annually. This forward-thinking approach shows how #AI can be harnessed to benefit both public agencies and industry stakeholders! 📷: Port of Singapore photo by Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) #SmartNationSG #AITrailblazers #GenerativeAI #DigitalGovernment
