In 1964, President Lyndon Johnson said, “Our aim is not only to relieve the symptoms of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it.” In 2024, poverty remains the biggest issue facing the world (UN). Status quo is not working. Human flourishing is limited, if not impossble in the face of poverty. Time to disrupt the traditional models that typically only addresses the symptoms of poverty, ie: providing access to material necessities. To forge an effective pathway out of poverty, we need to enable social mobility, evolve social entrepreneurship, and encourage social investments. To enable social mobility, we need to tackle inequality in our societies. Every individual should be equally empowered to succeed in life without being unfairly strangled by the lack of social mobility. Social entreprenership is not new, however, even after so many years, the infrastructure to support social enterprises remains lacking. Our understanding and appreciation for social enterprises needs to evolve for them to succeed. By combining profit-making with a social mission, social enterprises address poverty through innovative business models to attain sustainable solutions. Moving away from traditional investments to social investments like impact investing has proven to be a challenge, mainly because people are hung up on the question of "concessionary returns". Ultimately, that is the wrong question. The right question should be, "what are your values?" When values are aligned with purpose, social investments are a clear winner. Blended finance and other social finance tools have been hailed as game-changers in development finance, promising to fill the financing gap for impactful projects. However, despite the hype, these tools have struggled to gain traction, and their promise remains largely unfulfilled. Was the dream too good to be true? One major issue lies in the design of these instruments. They often assume that philanthropic capital should be used to mitigate risk for private investors, with the expectation of drawing in more private capital. However, from the philanthropist’s perspective, their capital shouldn’t be used to de-risk investments for private investors. This approach has prioritized the generosity of philanthropists over aligning with the values of private investors. Even mechanisms like first-loss capital aren't straightforward—while gains are shared, losses are borne by the philanthropist. Is relying on philanthropic funds to mobilize private capital the fairytale ending we hoped for? Or is it time to redesign these instruments to ensure a more equitable arrangement for all parties involved? However, these supply chains are often vulnerable to exploitation of the weakest links, who tend to be destitute. Consider the poor farmer at the beginning of the food supply chain, the factory worker, the cotton picker, or the child scavenging for plastic bags in piles of rubbish – their voices are rarely heard. For a long time, exploitative labor practices, discrimination, inequality, lack of worker rights and protection, environmental injustice, and a lack of transparency were rampant in supply chains focused solely on shareholder value and low consumer prices. With urbanization, climate change, and a decline in usable land for farming, small scale agriculture in an urban context might be our answer for future food security and sustainability. In particular, regenerative urban farming that shifts from a linear to a circular economy, and builds natural capital. Urban farms create jobs within the local community, capture carbon, offer community engagement, and help the environment as food travels a shorter distance. Why then has urban farms struggled to survive? As we change the way we produce food, the way we access it should also change correspondingly, i.e. our business model. Since these urban farms are now within our community, perhaps consumers can buy direct, instead of going through a retailer? This will help to bring the cost price down, and help local produce to be competitive with its imported counterparts. Long-term sustainability for urban farming cannot lie in only grants, but also in generating sufficient local consumer demand. At the core of consumer demand is the price, so we must help urban farmers to be competitive. As we innovate with creative solutions to produce our vegetables and fishes, we must also innovate our business models and way of doing things. Simply creating the ability to grow vegetables, or to farm fishes locally, is not the complete answer. Supply must be met with demand. Looking at you, 30 by 30.
