New blog 🔊 | A self-sustaining oasis in Dubai! ✨ At Expo 2020 Dubai, WOHA Architects’ Singapore Pavilion was a prototype for a lush and sustainable built environment of the future. This three-dimensional tropical garden functioned as a self-sustaining ecosystem. The pavilion, which operated for the six-month duration of Expo 2020 with net-zero energy and water consumption, was created in close collaboration with climatic engineering firm Transsolar KlimaEngineering and landscape architecture firm Salad Dressing. It extends four conserved shophouses from 1936, adding a contemporary rear block. The design seeks to incorporate history, art and sustainability in delightful and effective ways within the envelope-controlled heritage property. The jury appreciates the contributions of this adaptive reuse project to the skyline, characterized by its moderate scale but highly complex volumetric composition. The architects create delightful spaces through the juxtaposition between old and new, allowing for fresh readings of the conserved building.
