Humour is good especially when it captures the audiences’ attention . However , it may not be suitable in all situations. 1) Know the audiences and the situation.If the situation allows , it is good to add humour in our presentations as it is more engaging, memorable, and enjoyable for the audience. 2) Use real examples or examples where the audiences can relate to. 3) Be authentic and natural. I like to use humour in topics such as communication and leadership to illustrate my points .

My advice is “ Do not react “. Try to understand what makes him say that . However , one must bear in mind as there is a saying - one man’s meat is another man’s poison. We can’t please all men especially with bosses who are bias. I will do the following -Listen with the intent to understand. I have come across a boss who always think he is right and he does things without explanation. 2) Reflect- do our own reflection- if it is true , we have to change or improve . 3) Ask for feedback from someone who has the courage to tell the truth .

Not all bosses are approachable nor understanding . Is important to do some research of the person before you speak. I agreed that It is important to know oneself’s values , beliefs, goals and expectations as well as the organisation. During conversation or interview, you will be able to get a sense of whether the boss is aligned with the organisation’s mission and values . Many years ago before I started working in an organisation, my boss asked me what would make me join the organisation? I did not hesitate but was honest with him. I told him three things - 1) Allow me to train and develop the nurses 2) Allow me to continue teaching in NUS 3) I am not a “ puppet” and I will say my views but will not be rude. And I got the job !

Embrace life long learning and have a humility and teachable heart . Do not be afraid to ask questions if in doubt. Always be eager to learn new things and willing to adopt new ideas. Have good interpersonal skill so that we can communicate, collaborate and connect with others.

Is important not to make decision when you are emotional. Write down the reasons of leaving or staying . When you found “peace “ in your decision then is time to move on . Never burn your bridges even if you decide to leave because you do not know when your path will cross again . When things go well ; count it as a blessings . If you leave because things did not go well; count it as a learning. Always be appreciative of what you have learned in the current organisation. Treasure the friendship that you have forged ; the many good bosses who have groomed you in your career . The reason for leaving must be a better reason for staying !
