In high school, my focus on sports led to an interest of understanding how to optimise human athletic performance via training, nutrition and injury recovery. When I arrived at UC Berkeley, this interest influenced me to pursue enrolling into the Integrative Biology degree program to continue my passion for learning human anatomy and physiology.

I enrolled in a 3-month, part-time Data Science course at General Assembly, while I was working full-time. The curriculum focused on learning Python, statistics and Machine Learning. Classes were every Saturday with about 6 hours of lecture. For my final project, I conducted a sentiment analysis on LinkedIn posts that mention our product Sales Navigator. I then used Logistic Regression to assess what LinkedIn member demographics were most likely to post negative content about the product. Overall, it was a challenging experience balancing school and work simultaneously, but it gave me a great introduction to Data Science and helped me enhance my technical skill set. I decided to enroll in this course because I was motivated to accelerate my technical learning as I had never participated in any formal coding classrooms.

  • During the summer before my senior year, I studied abroad at Tokyo School of Music. It was a great opportunity to take a break from my science curriculum and expose myself to a new discipline and culture. This trip had a profound impact on me and it sparked a desire to return someday and actually speak the language. After I returned to UC Berkeley for my senior year, I enrolled in introductory Japanese, and I have been studying the language on my own ever since graduating.

  • Activities and Societies: Football, Basketball, Track & Field

At Terra Linda High School, I participated in three sports for all four years: football, basketball and Track & Field. This year-round commitment to athletics sparked my passion to learn about health and nutrition. As a result, I spent my summers at local colleges studying nutrition and human anatomy. This academic interest led to my decision to pursue a degree in Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley.

    Economic Empowerment

I mentored a Singaporean university student for 6 months with the focus of preparing him for his first full-time job after graduation. It was an incredible experience to work with my mentee. I provided support on reviewing his resume, building his LinkedIn profile, looking for jobs, preparing for interviews and managing stress. By the end of our mentorship program, my mentee secured a full-time position as a data analyst, which was immensely rewarding.

I co-led a two week winter break program at Cinq Perles Kindergarten in Sapporo, Japan. My assignment was teaching English to Japanese children between the ages of three to five. The curriculum consisted of engaging activities such as songs, kinetic games and playful everyday life scenarios. At the end of the program, the students crafted a picture book using English to illustrate their career aspirations.

    Health

During my undergraduate study, I entertained the possibility of pursuing a medical career. I decided to gain experience in this field by volunteering at a hospital dedicated to serving veterans. My main responsibility was escorting patients in wheelchairs or gurneys throughout the hospital. On top of that, I assisted in a study on mannequin doctor training and observed over 20 surgical procedures such as open hip and brain operations.
