In URA's Strategic Planning Group, we are responsible for Singapore's long-term land use planning, while being attuned to global trends and local issues. In 2011-2022, we conducted the 10-yearly Long-Term Plan Review (previously Concept Plan), where we concurrently engaged with the private sector and the public to capture their ideas and thoughts on Singapore’s land use planning approach.

In 2011-2022, we conducted the 10-yearly Long-Term Plan Review (previously Concept Plan), where we concurrently engaged with the private sector and the public to capture their ideas and thoughts on Singapore’s land use planning approach.

As an Executive Planner in Strategic Planning, I am in-charge of several portfolios, namely Port, Airport, Tourism and Dormitory land uses; I maintain an overview of related planning matters, while working with ministries and agencies to develop and evaluate land use strategies and safeguard land needs.

As the dormitory OIC, I am also collaborating with a few agencies to pilot a new housing typology for foreign workers in the Services sector to ensure labour resilience amid a heated rental market.

On top of these, I also have the opportunity to work with colleagues from other departments on cross-functional projects such as:
    (a) Sprint - visioning and masterplanning for a site in Serangoon (as part of the Draft Master Plan 2025),
    (b) Studio - visioning and masterplanning for a site in Rochor,
    (c) Draft Master Plan Horizontal 1 - identifying new planning strategies to factor in technological changes that could lead to a shift in howe we live, work and play

Sponsored by URA's Strategic Research team, this research sought to discover the factors of public spaces that affect social mixing. By conducting extensive qualitative researches on two sites in Singapore, we derived five factors of public spaces that could foster social mixing, and devised six interventions to further this objective.

Shaped the operations planning of Changi Airport's Terminal 5 by deriving insights and providing analysis using agent-based simulations and data analytics over a variety of studies. These ranged from sizing up capacities of processors and facilities based on forecasted passenger demands to validating feasibility of future operational concepts, as well as coming up with business continuity plans for scenario planning.

As part of the Systems Design Project, a core module under the Industrial & Systems Engineering bachelor programme, this project sought to improve capacity planning by devising solutions to manage identified product groups that are highly sensitive to demand fluctuations. As the team leader, I was responsible for setting project direction, scope and execution, as well as liaising with the representative from Infineon Technologies.

Prior to the expedition, we spent several months preparing for the education programmes for the natives through liaison with the World Toilet Organization and the Singapore Restroom Association. We also had to prepare ourselves physically for the trek up to the villages and beyond, along the Goecha-la trail, up to a height of 5500m above sea level.

As the head of the Education Team, I was responsible for leading team in:
    ■ Preparation of easy-to-understand educational materials (booklets, souvenirs, posters) for children at a local school,
    ■ Conducting of an interactive lesson with songs and dance for said children,
    ■ Choreographing a cultural exchange performance for said school.

As a team member of the expedition group, I:
    ■ Aided in construction of an ecological toilet for said school and the painting of murals.
    ■ Engaged in community service in Singapore prior to trip in collaboration with Singapore Restroom Association and World Toilet Organization to advocate same agenda among local primary school children.

    ■ Essentially, it is about using Operation Research techniques (or Linear Programming) to optimize the deployment of bridging buses to the various stations during an MRT disruption case scenario I set.

    ■ The motivation of my project came from learning that the current public transport operators (PTOs) deploy buses on an ad-hoc basis.

    ■ My project used travel demand from EZ-link card data, derived using R to find what is the best arrangement and number of buses sent to each station, given the limited supply of buses available, among other constraints.

    ■ Initially, my project was at a larger scale. To optimize the bus bridging system, there are several sub problems to solve. One would be to create the optimal routing system based on the stations that are down, the other would then be to send the optimal number of buses per route. Then there is the matter of accurately modelling the commuter flow. Ultimately, to scale down the scope, I only focused on finding the optimal number of buses per route, which was designed manually, and assumed a deterministic flow of commuters.
