Let’s start with what a career in marketing is NOT? It's NOT the team that parties, makes cool award winning videos, and hangs out with celebrities. So, What is it? It's the team responsible for representing the value created by the entire organisation to the consumer while smartly influencing consumer choice. It's the team that swings from left to right brain multiple times a day and not just during an offsite, it feels the consumers' heartbeats in rows of data and makes the rest of the organisation hear it, and it’s the 24x7 ERT for the brand reputation. After this, when they get a moment, this team does do a little bit of what I mentioned earlier in "what it's not." 😉 If this gets your energy popping, do consider marketing!

To win them over, think like a B2B marketer: - Don't Hear Them Out, LISTEN: What's going on under the surface? Tackling the unspoken is key to a winning GTM - Market to Them, Before the End-User: Start with "new benefits for me" (where me = sales team) - KNOW Their Motivators (Metrics): Align the company metrics before launch. Don't just reward outcomes, but also effort & adoption. - You Are The Parent, But They Are Baby-Sitters: Your product is your baby, not theirs. Don't expect the same emotional attachment & patience. Make selling easy for them. What I learnt: Partnerships make more products successful than successful products themselves!

Getting laid off sucks! The hard truth: while finding a new gig is important, what's critical is "finding your energy", because let's be honest, the wind's been knocked out of your sails. Try: ACKNOWLEDGE: The change is in the past. It's over, it's done. Don't let replay steal your energy ABSOLVE: Don't drain an ounce of your energy blaming yourself, the bosses, or anyone else. You can reflect later ALLOCATE: Every day do something to reenergize your battery. Hit the gym, walk, paint, play with your kids...whatever fills your tank ADORE ACTIONS, NOT OUTCOMES: A job hunt is an energy wave. Don't let rejections pull you down. Focus on what YOU can control ie your actions.. outcomes will happen Remember, everyone finds something

Knowing your numbers and metrics is definitely important but not losing sight of their impact on the business goal is paramount. Ops meetings can easily dissolve into the weeds - bleeding time on tracking & diagnosing tactical metrics. I have always admired the voices that sprint past the BAU to focus on elements that positively impact the end business goal or consumer experience

I fundamentally believe that a marketing officer has the privilege of representing the entire value created by their organisation (product, engineering , R&D, support xfn) to a customer. A successful marketer represents this in a manner that influences customer choice towards them.

Energy > Skills: The key to successful startup hiring In the rush to build, startup founders often prioritize rapid hiring, seeking candidates with niche skills. However, I believe the early stages demand a different approach. Prioritize these traits over ultra-specific experience: * High energy: Startups need self-starters who thrive on momentum. * Resilience: Setbacks are inevitable. Look for those who bounce back stronger. * "Do anything" attitude: Roles are fluid in a startup. Flexibility is vital. Founders often lack the full perspective to define highly specialized roles. Focusing on core traits ensures you build a team capable of adapting and growing with your startup.
