What do you do if your efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace are met with resistance?
Given the increasing awareness of diversity and inclusivity activities, most people will not openly challenge or resist, however, silently protest or incite unnecessary bias behaviour which may disrupt workplace relationship and harmony. As leaders, I believe consistency in messaging and actions in driving diversity and inclusive programmes is key to ensure these silent ‘protesters’ recognise you are serious about DEI and either they are aligned with the company direction driven by you or they can choose to find another suitable place which will align to their own beliefs.

What do you do if your efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace are met with resistance?
It’s important to have a diverse group of allies so that we can secure more support in driving diversity and inclusive efforts. Encourage your allies to have their story of both good and bad experience and readily share these stories with their team or peers. Stories always resonate better in people and you will find more people in your organisation sharing more stories of their own experiences and naturally expanding your network of allies.

What do you do if your efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace are met with resistance?
In many occasions, it’s due to cultural differences and beliefs, where it is not a practice for inclusivity. This becomes their reality and change becomes challenging. Such biases sometimes is conscious and it will take efforts and courage to continuously make the voice of the need for DEI heard at every opportunity to make this a new reality for many.
