AI-opening visit: #NTUsg recently welcomed Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and one of TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people in AI for 2023, to the Digital Trust Centre and the Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI), Nanyang Technological University. Ms Vestager, who oversees portfolios including Innovation, Research, and Digital within the European Commission, was received at the Digital Trust Centre by Associate Vice President (Strategy and Partnerships) Prof Kwok Yan Lam and the Ambassador of the European Union to Singapore, H.E. Iwona Piórko. During her visit, she learnt how Singaporean #academia approaches the responsible use of #ArtificialIntelligence and how NTU maintains its strong ties with European partners and #universities. #NTUsgEducation #AIatNTUsg #NTUsg2025

Hats off to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Candy Ko, an #NTUsg alumna from the Nanyang Business School, who has made history as Singapore's first female Police Tactical Unit Officer. At 32 years of age and a mother to two young children, ASP Ko overcame many personal and physical challenges to join the elite team of the Singapore Police Force. She also served as the Parade Commander at the graduation ceremony for officers who completed the rigorous three-month-long Police Tactical Course, where they earned the prestigious red beret. #STEM stars: Congratulations to the 200 pre-university students who received the Engineering & Tech Programme Scholarship from Ministry of Education, Singapore (MOE) at the investiture held at #NTUsg. The #scholarship will see the students study #STEM-related subjects in local universities and embark on a two-year journey to experience #engineering through curated workshops, opportunities to tackle real-world challenges, work attachments in both the public and private sectors, and access to experienced mentors. At the ceremony, the scholars also had the chance to share their passions and motivations with the Minister of State for Education and Manpower, Ms Siow Huang Gan, who was the Guest-of-Honour.

In 2020, Singapore made history by approving the sale of lab-grown meat, attracting significant interest from companies and investors. However, several years later, the industry is facing a slowdown. Speaking to Miro Lu from CGTN, Director of #NTUsg's Food Science and Technology Programme Prof William Chen explained that the current technology is not yet capable of scaling up effectively. He added that many food tech start-ups are discovering challenges with cell proliferation, working independently without collaboration and using investor funds primarily for upstream research rather than product development, which has hindered their ability to deliver on their promises. True trailblazers: Last month, brave thrill seekers took on the annual Adventure Trail Challenge (ATC) 2024, organised by #NTUsg's Outdoor Adventure Club. Held over a day, this suburban adventure race put participants through gruelling but exciting obstacle challenges, including multi-terrain adventure trails, bike tracks, and kayaking courses. This year's challenge saw 84 participants take on 11 different stations, covering 27km with 20km of running, 5km of cycling, and 2km of kayaking. The fastest team completed the challenge in an impressive 4 hours, 17 minutes, and 25 seconds. The kayaking station at PAssion Wave @ Jurong Lake Garden also had unique activities like balancing a cup of water on the head, carrying a ping pong ball on a spoon, and memory challenges to make things even harder and the journey more memorable. The 33-person strong team of student organisers took a year to plan the challenge while balancing their full-time studies. Sharing the spirit of #sustainability: Last week, #NTUsg welcomed Malaysia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, His Excellency Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, to the #NTUsgSmartCampus. He was welcomed by NTU Vice President (International Engagement) Prof Pooi See Lee and was given a tour of Gaia, NTU's latest Zero Energy Building and the largest wooden building in Asia. The numerous eco-friendly and energy-saving features of Gaia were introduced by Mr Swee Yong Tan, Principal Architect & Director, NTU Office of Development & Facilities Management. These include a Passive Displacement Ventilation (PDV) system with occupancy sensors that turn off air-conditioning when not in use. In a further nod to #sustainability, the timber used in Gaia’s construction was harvested from renewable forests in Austria, Sweden, and Finland. Assembled in Singapore like Lego pieces, this method produced less dust, debris, and noise pollution, while reducing construction time by 35 per cent.

#NTUsg President Prof Teck Hua Ho recently joined other senior university leaders at the APRU (Association of Pacific Rim Universities) Annual Presidents' Meeting in Auckland, New Zealand. During the panel discussion titled "Navigating the Tides: APRU Leadership in Addressing Climate Change", Prof Ho shared the stage with other esteemed academics, including Prof Elizabeth Watkins, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor of the University of California, Riverside; Prof Nancy Ip, President of the The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; and Prof Bill Flanagan President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Alberta. During the discussion, Prof Ho highlighted NTU's commitment to #sustainability through initiatives like its publicly-offered sustainability-linked bond, innovative research projects on waste reduction and energy efficiency, and green infrastructure projects like Gaia, Asia's largest wooden building. He also touched on NTU's research impact, including the Earth Observatory of Singapore's climate simulation using satellite imaging and key partnerships with other institutes, such as Max Planck for carbon-negative technologies. Beyond research, Prof Ho discussed NTU's role in translating innovations into practical solutions and collaborating with the #industry for practical #technology development. #NTUsg recently welcomed its pioneer cohort of Global Connect Fellowship (GCF) students. This initiative is aimed at international final-year bachelor's and master's students graduating in 2025 and offers a two-month immersive research experience on the #NTUsgSmartCampus. The first cohort consists of around 30 students who are potential PhD candidates, selected from over a thousand global nominations, representing 12 countries and 25 prestigious universities including UC Berkeley, Columbia University, University of Toronto, Tsinghua University, University of Tokyo, and IIT. These students will work with NTU's world-leading scientists on cutting-research areas including #AI, #Sustainability, #Robotics, Green #Hydrogen, Social Inequality, Human-AI Collaboration, #Decarbonisation, and #Genome Engineering.
