About

Experienced researcher, lecturer, consultant, leader and mentor, who was the 2021 recipient of the John L. Bryan mentoring award from the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), and the co-recipient (as part of the International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering) of the 2018 David A. Lucht Lamp of Knowledge Award from SFPE.

Recipient, with Ben Jacobs and Jens Steemann Kristensen (first author), of the 2023 Bigglestone Award (given to the paper that best represents excellence in the communication of fire protection concepts in Fire Technology) from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) for the paper entitled “Experimental Study of the Fire Dynamics in a Semi-enclosure Formed by Photovoltaic (PV) Installations on Flat Roof Constructions”.

My research and consultancy covers a very broad field of combustion and fire safety engineering, with a strong focus on experimental support for the reported findings. Topics include spacecraft fire safety, ignition and flame spread in microgravity environments, oil burning on water, photovoltaic panel fires, high pressure gas combustion, flame front instabilities, fire risk analysis, and fire dynamics in compartments with various construction elements as boundary.

I have a broad teaching experience related to fire safety engineering, having taught classes such as Fire Dynamics, Fire Chemistry, Fire Risk Analysis, Fire Risk Management, Building Fire Safety, Fire Protection Fluid Mechanics, Building Fire Technology, Fire Risk Assessment and Laboratory, and Applied Fire Safety – Standardization and Test Methods. In addition, I developed and managed a specialist education on Fire Investigation for the Danish National Police in collaboration with DBI. I also have substantial teaching experience in research methods (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=polpn5lyL6U).

Member of the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Technical Committee on Fire Risk Assessment Methods (FIR-AAA). During my tenure in the committee, two documents have been published: “NFPA 551: Guide for Evaluation of Fire Risk Assessments” and “NFPA 550: Guide to the Fire Safety Concepts Tree.”

In the FRISSBE project, I lead a group of researchers that focus on the link between fire safety and sustainability, both from a theoretical and experimental perspective. The main experimental research topics are fire behavior and safety aspects of photovoltaics, batteries, biobased materials and mass timber.

The main objective of the FRISSBE project is to establish an ERA Chair for fire-safe sustainable built environments at the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute, ZAG, where cutting-edge research infrastructure for fire testing is being established. Combining of the new research infrastructure and the ERA Chair will create the appropriate conditions for high-quality outstanding researchers and research managers to move and engage with the beneficiary, aiming to achieve excellence in the scientific field of fire-safe sustainable built environments and modify their research and innovation landscape. An outstanding researcher, the ERA Chair holder, will have a decisive and positive impact on the culture and performance of ZAG as a whole.

The FRISSBE project will implement new practices at ZAG by attracting and maintaining high-quality personnel under the direction of the ERA Chair holder. The project will lead to lasting, sustainable structural changes to achieve excellence at ZAG and spread excellence in the region. Changes will be tested in a new autonomous unit, the FRISSBE ERA Chair, and will be transferable to ZAG as a whole.

The concept will be tested on a few levels: testing the research enhancement process, building capacity in applying for competitive funds, and building sustainable relationships with the industry. FRISSBE will have regional impacts in terms of research, education, and engineering. Added-value of the project is amplifying the capacities of the Fire laboratory co-financed with ERDF funds, ensuring conditions to foster excellent research.
