Igor Kotnik, born in Ljubljana.
I live and work in my studio in Brezovica near Ljubljana.
For me, painting means relaxation and escape from everyday work, into the world of dreams and
illusions. The motifs in my paintings are mostly from nature, which fills me with energy and ideas. In
1979 I graduated from the School of Design in Ljubljana. I am a fashion designer by education,
occasionally creating collections for Rašica and Trikon, but then I switched and focused on designing
and making sample collections of women s footwear at the Zmaga footwear factory in Ljubljana and
Humanic. After 1990, however, my paths took me to other areas.
Occasionally I also did design from clay, plaster and wood, but painting has been my first
love since childhood. I have been painting, drawing and creating for more than five decades - some
periods more intensely, others a little less so. I started with watercolors, oil paints on canvas and
wood, synthetic paints, inks and combinations with different color techniques. Then I opted for dry
pastels on paper and acrylics on canvas, which give me amazing spectral and creative possibilities.
My works on canvas and paper are always created next to the piano sounds of classical music. As a
child, I attended various art workshops and courses when I was 9 years old, and I presented myself
and my early collection in 1969 at a group exhibition of young artists in the Modern Gallery (ink
painting of the rooster). I had my first solo exhibition in 1984 at the M-tourist gallery in Ljubljana.
Later, I had works occasionally exhibited in smaller companies, and I am currently exhibiting at a group
exhibition in Prague under the auspices of AAMI international. My works are also in private
collections in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands
