Deep-Fried Candy Corn is perhaps the best way to eat candy corn. A warm, crispy fried dough ball with melted candy corn inside, sprinkled with powdered sugar. Candy corn can’t possibly get any better than that.

Deep-Fried Candy Corn

Every year I say I am going to go to either the State Fair in Columbia, SC or the one in Raleigh, NC. But this time of year I seem to be so busy that many things on my fall to do list don’t get done. Biking the Virginia Creeper Trail? Been wanting to do that for 5 years. My kids are too old to even want to do it anymore.

I have plans to make it to the State Fair this year (like always) but just in case I don’t make it, I decided to cook up a little State Fair-esque treat. There always seems to be a competition at the State Fair for the craziest fried food. Or at least, that’s what I hear. I wouldn’t know because I never make it there.

Deep-Fried Candy Corn
Deep-fried Candy Corn is one pretty crazy fried food. I’m not a huge fan of the taste of candy corn, but frying them in a simple batter of Bisquick mixed with buttermilk, an egg, and some cornflakes, incredibly enhances their flavor. Or maybe tames it.

Cornflakes seemed like a strange addition, but they really helped the flavor. I wouldn’t have known they were there had I not been the one to add them to the batter. You don’t notice a crunch or anything. I had forgotten how much I like cornflakes and I ate them for lunch three times this week.

Deep-Fried Candy Corn
This recipe is from the cookbook Southern Living The Way to Fry: Fresh, fabulous recipes for the modern Southern cook which I got for Christmas last year and am just now getting around to cooking something from. It has a whole section of crazy fried foods including Deep-Fried Jack and Coke and Deep-Fried Pimiento Cheese Sandwich.

I don’t deep fry foods that often so the only question is should I try the Fried Jack and Coke this year or save it for next year? And would it be an inappropriate food for my teenage kids to eat? Lol!

Instructions

  • Drain on a wire rack placed over paper towels.
  • To serve, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
