  • Switzerland haven’t beaten England in 13 matches, dating back to 1981.
  • England have the third-best possession rate (60.5%) but are only 11th in expected goals (5.23).
  • Switzerland hopes to qualify for the Euro semifinals for the first time.

England pulled off one of the greatest escapes in the nation’s footballing history when Jude Bellingham scored a sensational overhead goal deep in stoppage time to send their Round of 16 match against Slovakia into extra time.

Harry Kane finished with a close-range header to send England into a state of delirium and palpable relief.

The Three Lions have a more challenging task in Saturday’s first quarterfinal against Switzerland, who beat Italy 2-0 in the Round of 16 to secure their second consecutive quarterfinal berth.

Soccer betting odds have England as the +120 favourites to win in 90 minutes, while Switzerland is pegged as +270 underdogs.

England vs. Switzerland Odds: Euro 2024

  • England Moneyline: +120
  • Switzerland Moneyline: +270
  • Draw Moneyline: +200
  • Total Goals: Over 2.5 (+145), Under 2.5 goals (-204)

England vs. Switzerland Prediction

I predict England and Switzerland will require extra time and possibly penalties to decide their final-eight clash, which kicks off at noon ET from Dusseldorf Arena.

England fans hope the Three Lions will finally match their lofty potential. We’ve yet to see them play their free-flowing best through four matches. England bossed the ball in every match, but much of their possession has been slow and predictable, often with far too many lateral or backward passes.

There has also been a disturbing lack of movement, limiting the ball carrier’s forward options. However, England arguably possesses the most individual talent of any participating nation and is desperate to break free from the persisting shackles.

While Bellingham’s goal may be the catalyst England require to go on a free-flowing and enterprising run, most who have consistently watched the team are more accustomed to an altogether different reality.

England will most likely dictate possession and easily knock the ball around in the middle third while struggling to create clear sights on goal. England have only 12 shots on target in four matches, tied for the eighth fewest and just 5.23 expected goals, ranked 11th.

Switzerland are accustomed to playing a deep defensive line, waiting patiently for the opportunity to hit on the counter. Through four contests, the Swiss have 48% possession, the 15th best.

However, Switzerland have seven goals (tied for the third most) and 18 shots (tied for the seventh most), showcasing their elite ability to carve out chances from minimal possession. They’re also incredibly opportunistic, scoring seven goals from 5.08 expected goals.

England hopes that their domination over Switzerland continues. The Swiss haven’t beaten England in 13 matches, dating back to 1981.

While it’s tempting to base your betting decision on that stat, remember that Switzerland hadn’t beaten Italy in 11 consecutive contests before emphatically ending that streak in the Round of 16.

BetMGM’s online sports betting odds have a draw after 90 minutes at +200, which is the wager I find most appealing.

England should eventually prevail unless the contest goes to penalties.

Best bet: Moneyline draw (+200)
