The Eras Tour | Lover section
Versace custom
Welcome to The Eras Tour, everyone.
Here, we begin a comeback tour where we seemingly last left off: With not only the first album under Taylor’s new record contract that she owns but that also had its live iteration cancelled. The candy coated colours of this Versace bodysuit are an on-brand callout to the Lover aesthetic while also being very signature to the iridescent embellishments that Versace is known for. This is what you call perfect brand alignment - what a great designer to bring this vision to life.
But more than that, the opening of the tour sees dancers encircle Taylor in seashell-shaped props. The effect evokes the birth of Venus - goddess of love. This makes sense on multiple levels not only for its literal connection to the album Lover and Taylor wanting to be known for the things that she loves, not the things that she hates (as per “Daylight”). But also the Birth of Venus painting depicts the goddess emerging from the sea, fully formed. No one moulded Venus, she came into existence herself. I can imagine Taylor feeling a kinship with that thought as someone whose life is a direct result of her life, her words, her work. And opening this particular tour with that kind of imagery feels all the more appropriate and powerful.

In the world of tour costuming, Taylor is no stranger to an on stage quick change. Most of the time, she does it as if by a magic trick. One second she’s in one ensemble, the next in a blur of moving bodies or sleight of hand she’s in a different one. The Eras Tour employs this trick, but it also isn’t afraid to lean in to the simple change of outerwear.
For “The Man”, Taylor dons a completely custom bedazzled blazer which not only made my predictions very happy but serves as a seamless way to completely change an outfit and also visually tie in to the theme of the song being performed. The set transforms and the dancers don stuffy corporate suits and Taylor changes accordingly - albeit in a more glam fashion.

This is Taylor Swift at her most classic for the stage - a fringed, sparkly dress and boots. It doesn’t get more staple than that.
And I may or may not be emotional thinking about the longstanding history Taylor has forging iconic tour looks with this designer. You may recall the iconic opening look of the Speak Now Tour - also a gold fringe dress - was RC. A journey through the eras, indeed.

It’s of zero surprise to me that this ruffled, tie-front dress that Taylor wears for the evermore section on tour is by Etro. You’ll recall me specifically name checking them as a point of reference for the designs of her folkmore sections as part of my TSS Predictions post. The Grammy performance really was a key jumping off point to nailing the bohemian goddess cottagecore look worthy of these albums visuals.

I audibly gasped when I first saw photos of this asymmetrical bodysuit. The red, black, and diamond beads are pure art but the way the snakes intertwine and cover her body like tendrils create beautiful movement across the entire garment. The way it only exposes half of her body also gives the visual of being enveloped and becoming one with the snake, while still exposing vulnerable parts of human flesh. To me, this speaks to the duality of reputation itself - an album that’s all about the interplay between perception and reality.
The one arm silhouette is also an artful and subtle nod to the original version of her opening bodysuit by Jessica Jones from the reputation Tour.

This stunning ballgown is an architectural feat and gives us a very strong throwback to Taylor’s Valentino ballgown on the Speak Now Tour. I had a lot of discussions early on in the prediction phase of this tour whether Taylor would incorporate new costumes into her wardrobe or allude to previous iterations of her tours of eras past.
This was a very well executed mix.
You’ll also recognize this designer from the “I Bet You Think About Me” music video.

In my predictions post, I had noted that I wouldn’t be surprised if we got beautiful goddess references to cottagecore in the vein of her 2021 Etro Grammys moment.
This mauve-toned, chiffon gown mixes bohemian elements thanks to its ruffles and flutter sleeves and lace with very subtle stage-worthy embellishments. Well done.

Another moment where a throwback to previous style was going to be an easy win. There’s nothing like a matching crop top and skirt with sparkle booties to evoke the 1989 Tour. Fausto Puglisi did an incredible job with the unique diamond-shaped Swarovski work here.

The most direct reference to present Midnights fashion comes via this faux fur jacket - a designer take on the Free People faux she wears in the “Lavender Haze” music video.
The number of times outerwear is used as a method of quick change to impact the silhouette of a look (the duster added during her RED set) or shift the visual direction of an outfit (the Boss blazer added for “The Man”) feels like a fun folkmore reference to the chic outerwear that dominated those visuals.

As a former dancer myself who’s done a chair dance, I respect and feel a kinship towards Taylor challenging herself with more intricate and highly choreographed numbers on this tour. It’s even more impressive when you consider that the number appears on the tour’s final section of a three hour show.
The fringe on this midnight blue bodysuit drips beautifully over her hips here and plays multiple roles. Serving to mimic raindrops for “Midnight Rain”, a fun twirly moment worthy of strutting and spinning during “Bejeweled”, and to add a sensual tasseled burlesque feel during that aforementioned chair dance of “Vigilante Shit”. Plus it also feels kind of cheeky western glam.

Once again, these Versace bodysuits really are coming through like works of art. This bodysuit looks like a glitter Renaissance painting.

This dress was incredibly fun in motion - the degradé here is thanks to thousands of hand-applied Swarovski crystals.

The starburst bodice design feels just the right amount of ethereal and “sparkling” for a song like “Enchanted” and I actually like the tonal pink on pink of Taylor against the screens here. But I think I prefer Version 1 for its more overt similarities to the Speak Now Tour finale gown.

Well we are certainly in for quite a ride with this tour if Taylor plans to continue to serve fresh versions of her looks. On Night 2 of Glendale, AZ Taylor switched up her goddess gown for her folklore set to this tiered, cream gown. The split sleeve details feel almost capelike, which I love. the flutter cap sleeve also feels simultaneously dainty and armour-like.
I think this could have made a stronger impact in a different colour.

If you follow the TSSQ blog then you know I have an ongoing tag dedicated to me live reacting to Taylor in green. Needless to say that tag was popping off yesterday when Taylor swapped out her original pink co-ord set for the 1989 section of her setlist for this gree(eeeeeeeeeeee)n one. And matching booties, natch.
I don’t think I need to elaborate further that this set is my clear favourite between the two.
Doesn’t she just look like the happiest string bean in green?
