Gucci 'Horsebit Leather Sandals’ - $920.00

Someone got a haul of Gucci recently and decided to wear it all in one fell weekend. It’s not uncommon for Taylor to be brand loyal and to wear a slew of things from a single designer many times over, consecutively. Think FP, Ref, or Stella McCartney. Even Vivienne Westwood and Gant as recent examples. These are brands Taylor has worn back to back for years. Taylor also turned to Gucci a lot in reputation’s years, particularly for its iconic kingsnake motif. I can’t imagine it given Taylor’s hesitancy to take on an official fashion label endorsement contract, but I can’t deny she and Travis have donned a lot of matching Gucci recently. It has raised my brows, esp as logo-heavy items aren’t typically something Taylor wears, but not enough to think an official contract is underfoot. Rather, I think it’s a choice to make for a sequence of cohesive back to back public outings. I’d even be willing to believe it was setting the stage for a Gucci red carpet at the MTV VMAs on Wednesday.

If I were to nitpick styling, as someone very Pro Sandwich Style, I can appreciate the matching accessories coordinating her purse and sandals. As a neutrals lover, I also love the combo of black + brown. That said, upon first glance of this ‘fit sans coat I originally thought keeping both of her Gucci accessories from the US Open earlier for a pop of colour + tonal coordination with the dress’ leather details would have served this outfit well.

Luckily, this is a time when the coat becomes greater than the sum of an outfit’s parts and works as the key to bringing all of the disparate elements together. The addition of the darker (almost black, from a distance) buttons on her trench did just about enough to bring the bag and shoes into a clearer, more intentional light.

While some wondered if Taylor would appear at any NYFW shows this week, a sporty outing to watch a fellow American Taylor (Fritz) in the US Open final is just as fun. And such great symmetry! The gingham print of this dress is sweet and breezy. It calls to mind picnics on the grass, apple pies, and Americana. In other words, a wholesome and summery piece to wear when supporting an American athlete. Love!

The brand is also a longtime Taylor staple. She’s been wearing Reformation pieces since 2012!

Taylor has been on a bit of a Louis V kick as of late, adding these monogrammed earrings to her latest run of pieces that have included two bags and a pair of boots.

Among Taylor’s style pillars include the art of the high/low (mixing high end designer pieces with more approachably priced items) and indie designers. To my eye, it looks like Taylor has added a new eyewear brand to her collection - the humourously named Crap Eyewear which are founded and designed in Los Angeles, CA.

Taylor’s jewelry was, once again, a lot of repeats. Pieces that she’s worn and loved and had in her jewelry box for awhile. Both bracelets seemingly haven’t left her wrists since she wore them to the Chiefs vs Ravens game last week. The #Tiffany ring was an addition she wore on the Eras Tour stage during the first round of dates in London. The #Foundrae crest necklace was worn back in January of this year. Set into a crest, this collection for Foundrae is a celebration of love in all its forms including romantic, platonic, and self. Taylor’s discography, of course, famously “a love letter to love itself” which makes this a perfect piece for her.

The Retrouvai pieces are also familiar. The ‘Magna’ ring Taylor wore to the Super Bowl earlier this year. The heart ring you might recognize as from the “I Bet You Think About Me” music video which Taylor’s friend Blake Lively directed. This ring also just so happens to be Blake’s. It was a bespoke commission as part of the brand’s Heirloom collection and comprises an 8-carat heart shaped rubellite set off with a halo of 2.5-carat diamonds. Designer Kirsty Stone described Blake as a “true jewelry lover” and the “incredible” opportunity it was to design something for “her personal collection.”

For a coordinating pop of red against her gingham check dress. This was a cute pairing! You might also recognize this bag from the London candids in June.

Attending a wedding | New York City, NY | September 8, 2024

Larkspur & Hawk ‘Posy Earrings’ - no longer available
EF Collection ‘Diamond Mini Huggie & Prong Set Chain Stud Earring’ - $850.00
Cartier ‘Agrafe Herringbone Twisted Necklace’ - $27,250.00
Jacquie Aiche ‘Spaced Out High Neck Body Chain’ - $11,550.00
Wove Made x Michelle Wie West 'Custom Diamond Tennis Bracelet’ - $5,680.00 (starting)
Lizzie Mandler ‘3 Row Cleo Bracelet’ - $18,300.00
Zimmermann ‘Halliday Dress’ - $795.00
Vivienne Westwood 'Rosie Circle Frame Denim-Jacquard Bag’ - $544.00
Christian Louboutin ‘Condora ’85 Leather Heeled Sandals’ - $845.00

It’s not often we see Taylor looking this fancy outside Electric Lady - the NY recording studio where she’s recorded many of her albums (including all TV’s, Lover, folklore, Midnights, and TTPD). On this occasion, Taylor wasn’t heading in for a session - but for a wedding! With Travis as +1, the two were guests to the nuptials of model Karen Elson and Electric Lady Studios owner Lee Foster. To Vogue, Karen noted the importance of having one of their intimate ceremonies (the other was in Nashville) at Electric Lady. “[Lee has] put his heart and soul into [it] … it’s really his home,” she said.

Taylor has a go-to wedding guest formula: a fit/flare midi dress, tons of jewelry, and minimalist heels. The dress is lovely and I’m a fan of the scallop detail at the top and hem + the pretty floral print. I can’t even get too mad at the wrinkles - it’s linen, after all. Overall, it’s a great pick for a breezy, late summer garden party. And of course I’m a fan of those minimal ankle strap heels (natch).

The addition of the “something blue” bag was genius. It ties into the blue of her floral print + the coordinating Vivienne Westwood polo Travis was wearing. While Taylor couldn’t have known, it also played nicely with the bride’s custom Valentino gown which featured a blue floral appliqué. The biggest question mark? If wearing such a light coloured dress to a wedding is appropriate. There are unconfirmed remarks that the bride requested female guests wear cream. As someone who loves to aggressively plan and prefers to err on the side of caution, I elect to stay away from a dress this light - even with a floral print - when dressing for a wedding. Though Taylor’s dress is actually much warmer toned in retail photos. It falls closer to a pale orange. Ultimately, if this was indeed bride’s orders - I think she aced the assignment.

I love that Taylor’s jewelry styling tapped into one of her key style pillars: repetition. All of these are familiar pieces we’ve seen styled before. The oldest are her earrings which she first showed off in 2021. Next is her beloved vintage Cartier necklace which she acquired last summer. And, most recently, both her EF Collection earrings and Lizzie Mandler bracelet which she wore to the Chiefs vs Ravens opening season game this week.

In looking at her jewelry, my eye also happened to spot a body chain she paired with her Cartier necklace. This immediately brought me back to Jack Antonoff’s wedding last summer when she also wore this piece. Maybe it’s her wedding signature move.

“I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” music video | August 20, 2024

Awe Inspired ‘Rhiannon Necklace’ - $225.00

Taylor has worn a number of pieces by this brand before, including a ‘Woman Power’ pendant (100% of the proceeds were donated to Planned Parenthood) and the ‘Le Duo’ pendant. This particular chain is noted as referencing the enchantress / Goddess Rhiannon to honour lovers of nature and beauty. But I’m sure it appealed to Taylor for the Stevie Nicks / Fleetwood Max reference as they have a song by this same name.

On stage at Eras Tour | London, England | June 23, 2024

Tiffany & Co ‘Diamond Wire Ring’ - $2,675.00

The Eras Tour costuming has been unique in many ways but one that I’ve noted specifically is the care Taylor has taken when it comes to accessorizing over the course of her three hour set. There are dedicated necklaces worn during the Lover set to coordinate with a particular bodysuit. She wears a 'RED’ merch replica of her Cathy Waterman 'LOVE’ ring during the RED set. These are obvious bits of costuming that take the immersion of the show into that time period’s era that one step further - because details matter.

Taylor doesn’t typically wear personal pieces on the stage, though that’s changed somewhat since last summer when she added a few new lobe piercings to her ears and she’s since opted to wear her own earrings on the stage. But my eye happened to catch a new addition to her ring stack on Night 3 in London with what appears to be a T&Co ring. The 'wire’ design is iconic from the Tiffany’s T collection and, of course, features two T’s mirroring one another.

On vacation | Lake Como, Italy | May 17, 2024

Cartier ‘Agrafe Herringbone Twisted Necklace’ - $27,250.00
Versace ‘Medusa Small Tote’ - $1,995.00
Versace Gianni Ribbon Open Patent Ballerinas’ - $925.00

In between Eras Tour stops in Europe, Taylor opted for some vacation time at this very romantic and popular lakeside tourist destination in Italy.

I’d personally totally copy + paste this particular ‘fit. Doesn’t it have a certain classic Euro vacation energy to it? A classic trench, LBD, and coordinating black accessories feel timeless and chic. Particularly these on-trend mary jane ballerinas. The Cartier necklace is one Taylor started wearing last May and has pulled out intermittently - often with all black outfits as a fancy ‘pop’ I’d imagine.

The Eras Tour | The Tortured Poets Department section | Version 1.5

Vivienne Westwood ‘White Three Row Bas Relief Choker’ - $690.00

I don’t think I’ve seen Taylor as committed to accessorizing as she has been on the Eras Tour.

It started with the Versace necklaces she wears for the opening Lover set, with each version getting its own coordinating necklace. Even the RED set sees Taylor wear the refreshed version of the Cathy Waterman ‘Love’ ring that appeared in the original 2012 album photoshoot and was later reworked to say ‘Red’ for the 2021 Taylor’s Version re-record.

During the TTPD set, Taylor has taken to coordinating her three row VW choker based on the two piece set worn underneath her corseted gown. So far, she’s worn a black one for her black and grey sets and this white one for a white set.

These are relatively small details but I find myself appreciating them so much. It’s the little things! Especially in a show that already requires so many quick costume changes, accessory swaps are something that could easily be forgotten about or done away with for ease. It’s with this in mind that I really appreciate that she chooses to complete the visual package as she goes through a live retrospective of the past ‘eras’ of her life.

The Eras Tour | The Tortured Poets Department section | Version 1

Vivienne Westwood ‘Messaline Orb Three Row Choker’ - $600.00

Many more thoughts to come on the newly added Tortured Poets set to the Eras Tour, but it feels noteworthy with this necklace to take a moment and track the progression of VW as an Easter Egg.

Back in January, Taylor threw us an intentional Easter egg red herring courtesy of a candid outfit while out to dinner with Blake Lively. Her ensemble (a velvet olive green dress and leather boots adorned with snakes) screamed reputation (as she knew it would be perceived as such) but the hidden clue all along was the VW bag she was carrying.

The bag in question featured VW’s iconic 'orb’ logo which we also see here on this choker. The orb, to VW, was meant to be a take on the Sovereign orb of the British Royal Family and a cheeky reference to Vivienne’s self-described title of “queen” of fashion.

We also saw one of Vivienne Westwood’s ruffled shirts pop up in the “Fortnight” music video as Taylor received electroshock therapy for her perceived descent into madness.

And now we see this designer on the Eras Tour stage, bringing together the Clara Bow-esque choker accessorizing from Taylor’s 2024 Grammys appearance full circle.

It also doesn’t escape my notice that Taylor would opt to use the designs of one of the most well know British designers in the stage incarnation of what she dubbed Female Rage: The Musical from an album that achingly documents two high profile splits from British men.

Grace Lee ‘Demi Earrings’ - $1,298.00

One of my favourite parts of the album listening experience is, of course, the new set of visuals that come with it. While there’s much to be said about interpreting clues, patterns, and preferences in aesthetic from the case study that candids provide, I view the album photoshoot as the most ‘canonical’ of every era. And oh *swoon* is this one ever beautiful. The original album cover set it up and the rest of the album’s photographs followed through to create a beautifully raw, desaturated world. One that provides ample space between all the black and white for the music to paint with all the shades of grey that its messy, complicated circumstances depict.

In this particular shot, I love that we get to see Taylor’s hair smoothed out into a more classical glamour shot with a low, off-shoulder garment that exposes her back. Again, underlining the vulnerability of the shoot itself and how that ties into its respective work. The only ornamentation we see is from her modern, curved #GraceLee earrings.

But what’s most interesting in this shot are what appears to be calla lilies resting on her shoulder. The flowers look so naturally tied into the shot they could almost be the ends of her hair or floral embellishments on the garment. Of course, Taylor being Taylor there’s a lot to possibly interpret from these flowers (the language of flowers is fascinating and there’s a lot of conflicting and wide-reaching symbolisms to each). That said, calla lilies are a common funeral service flower as they’re typically seen as symbols of resurrection and rebirth or purification of a departed soul. Broken calla lilies on tombstones often indicate someone who died before their time. With a lot of lyrical imagery across the album that centers on death, dying, and grief this makes the most sense

The calla lily also has ties to other themes we’ve already seen Taylor opt into for #TTPD. First, the Victorian era, the lily having become popularized in the 1800s (the Victorian age was 1820-1914). Secondly, in Greek mythology as it’s often seen as the symbol of Hera (goddess of marriage).

Editorial Note: Original cover image captured by Beth Garrabrant - Taylor’s album photographer since folklore. In place of Beth’s image, for which she retains rights, I’ve commissioned a lovely demonstrative illustration by the talented Amelia Noyes.

Vintage brooch ℅ Joseph Saidian & Sons jewelry

In another fashion reference to the night of the 2024 Grammys when Taylor wore a Concord watch converted into a choker by Lorraine Schwartz which then seemed to be used as a tipping point between eras, Taylor wore a diamond vintage brooch by #JosephSaidianandSons that was converted into a necklace for this #ClaraBow-esque makeup moment (the thin, drawn-on brows here feel very ‘30s).

Taylor previously wore one of their vintage bracelets at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
