The Eras Tour | Midnights section | Version 5

Zuhair Murad custom

As I’ve noted throughout the tour, one should expect the unexpected when it comes to new costumes. As in, they can happen at any time in any city at any time. Even as we’re approaching the end of the European leg and creeping closer and closer to the bittersweet moment when this tour takes its final bow.

The moment I saw this bodysuit I just knew it had to be a custom ZM piece. Not just because they’ve been responsible for 3 of the past designs for this costuming portion of the show but because that embellishment work is so distinctively Zuhair Murad. That intricate corsetry work and fringe? It’s so signature to them. The design itself took the atelier “over 120 hours to create”, according to Vogue, and features “180 stars [and] 10,500 crystal beads.”

Of the five bodysuits we’ve seen I think this one might just be a new favourite. The designer, Zuhair Murad, told Vogue the same thing. “I think this new iteration is our best yet, with symbolism that blends Taylor’s inspiration and my love for romanticism perfectly. I’ve always designed strong silhouettes, and I think that naturally translates well to the stage.” The additions of embellishments via the stars and moons feel very appropriate to the era, don’t they? That crescent moon in particular reminds me of her Clio Peppiatt dress she wore on her birthday last year. Murad said that the “vision” for the stars and moons was, unsurprisingly, all Taylor. Though a small part of me also reads the stars across the bust as a little star spangled Americana which feels a little funny given it got its debut in London. #iykyk

It also got me thinking that one of my favourite parts of the Lover set is how her boots (often strassed in ombre crystals) are also swapped out to coordinate with the bodysuit she’s wearing. With this particular bodysuit, I couldn’t help but imagine what a lighter silver or navy pair would look like for this set. For the Midnights section, Taylor consistently wears a dark pair of ‘Gael’ boots by Christian Louboutin.

Quickly climbing my personal ranking of the Midnights bodysuits! I personally prefer this true midnight blue navy tone over the ‘blurple’ of some of the other suits in this set. The chevron-like details of the crystal placements, keyhole detail, and cutouts are well so well executed here.

In terms of neckline, I think she’s also found a sweet spot in this latest round of costume additions with a halter neckline that probably provides the functional support and security needed during these performances.

Like we were (new outfits) in Paris! After about four fortnights off, Taylor brought the Eras Tour back for its European leg in France. And with this new leg comes a handful of setlist changes (sections moved! songs omitted! Tortured Poets added!) and, more importantly, costume changes.

The first of course is a new tequila sunrise-y bodysuit, boots, and blazer ensemble for the opening Lover set. This particular version makes five variants for this portion of the show.

One of my favourite moments in the Eras Tour is how the Lover set seems to fulfill Taylor’s original vision of a summer festival moment (that we likely would have had with the sadly cancelled Lover Fest) and that its colourways seem to mimic that of a sunset.

Welcome back to the Eras Tour! After a two-ish month break, Taylor picked up where the US/Mexico dates of the Eras Tour left off at the end of the summer with a rousing first of three shows in Buenos Aires, Argentina - and with it, new costuming!

I’ve mentioned previously that while I suspect the Eras Tour setlist will remain largely the same on all international legs of this tour, that one is never safe from outfit variations. On past tours, Taylor has introduced new versions all throughout the length of a tour.

This particular bodysuit is Version 4 of her opening costuming - and is quite possibly the best (or at least top two for me). This version feels very, “Hi Barbie!” in the very best way. I love the pink shades here that are a great nod to Lover candy coated sunset colouring while still also feeling rich and dramatic.

There’s also a certain wonderful power and confidence in wearing a vivid pink sparkly blazer Elle Woods and Barbie would be proud of to perform “The Man”.

From the colour, the neckline, the swooping cutouts, and the fringe - you’d be forgiven if you blinked and thought you were transported to August 26, 2015 when Taylor wore a strikingly similar bodysuit by Yousef Al Jasmi on the 1989 Tour at the then fifth and final night of dates at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Knowing what we know now given the 1989 (Taylor’s Version) of it all - perhaps we should have seen its announcement coming.

The beadwork and embellishments on this particular bodysuit are so intricate. Where the other two bodysuits rely on spangles and sequins, the raised starry-sky crystal embellishments on both the bodysuit and its nude illusion mesh at its base create such lovely movement that truly feels more akin to looking up at an expanse of cosmic sky. Also nice to see a matchy matchy new garter as well.

I wouldn’t have minded a more clearly defined organic shape for the illusion mesh on her torso (the similarity to a sequinned six pack is strong here) but I love this neckline and the cheekier cut on this particular bodysuit.

The colours and new ombré boots? 13/10.

The exaggerated fringe-y tassels? Less so.

But these Versace bodysuits are truly a work of art - just wish we had stopped while we were ahead.

Swapping out her other glittery bodysuit, Taylor must have been under the Vegas influence when it came to certain accessories last night. This take on the Midnights bodysuit has a lot of similarities - same colour family, spangly embellishments, and richly beaded fringe.

As is a lot of things when it comes to Taylor’s fashion, an accessory is often more than just an accessory and is also often more than just one thing at once. While garter belts are a mainstay in burlesque performance costuming, this particular version veers closer to those seen most often in Western wedding traditions. It makes me think about the decision to wear something so intricately tied up in marital practices worn during a song about refusing to dress up in ways to fill roles expected of her, forging her own path towards karmic retribution, and biding time until a man gets what’s coming to them.

But oh to be in a position to commission a custom midnight blue crystal garter (also by ZM). As if “Vigilante Shit” weren’t saucy enough.

Once again, these Versace bodysuits really are coming through like works of art. This bodysuit looks like a glitter Renaissance painting.

As a former dancer myself who’s done a chair dance, I respect and feel a kinship towards Taylor challenging herself with more intricate and highly choreographed numbers on this tour. It’s even more impressive when you consider that the number appears on the tour’s final section of a three hour show.

The fringe on this midnight blue bodysuit drips beautifully over her hips here and plays multiple roles. Serving to mimic raindrops for “Midnight Rain”, a fun twirly moment worthy of strutting and spinning during “Bejeweled”, and to add a sensual tasseled burlesque feel during that aforementioned chair dance of “Vigilante Shit”. Plus it also feels kind of cheeky western glam.

The Eras Tour | RED section

Ashish custom

This jumpsuit and matching duster are beautiful and up there in my Top 3 favourite outfits from this tour.

The execution of the ombre is fantastic. And it’s subtle but I love the fact that the duster is notably a duster coat with a pointed collar. It could have been a shawl collar or an unstructured cardigan but the addition of the collar gives it a distinct jacket/polished/boss energy and I am here for it.

Also again the continued usage of outerwear to change a look easily and quickly.

You may recognize this designer as the original source of the “Not A Lot Going On” sequin tee that gets riffed on elsewhere in the tour wardrobe here from the “22” music video.

The Eras Tour | Lover section

Versace custom

Welcome to The Eras Tour, everyone.

Here, we begin a comeback tour where we seemingly last left off: With not only the first album under Taylor’s new record contract that she owns but that also had its live iteration cancelled. The candy coated colours of this Versace bodysuit are an on-brand callout to the Lover aesthetic while also being very signature to the iridescent embellishments that Versace is known for. This is what you call perfect brand alignment - what a great designer to bring this vision to life.

But more than that, the opening of the tour sees dancers encircle Taylor in seashell-shaped props. The effect evokes the birth of Venus - goddess of love. This makes sense on multiple levels not only for its literal connection to the album Lover and Taylor wanting to be known for the things that she loves, not the things that she hates (as per “Daylight”). But also the Birth of Venus painting depicts the goddess emerging from the sea, fully formed. No one moulded Venus, she came into existence herself. I can imagine Taylor feeling a kinship with that thought as someone whose life is a direct result of her life, her words, her work. And opening this particular tour with that kind of imagery feels all the more appropriate and powerful.

Moschino romper - not available for purchase (pictured similar)

Tentatively from the two appearances we’ve seen, it’s really fascinating the juxtaposition of this level of glamour and glitz with what appears to be one of her most introspective and potentially dark works to date.

While Taylor has explored vintage styles in previous era’s (RED), this feels like a more luxe showgirl-esque version of that. And when placed in the context of an album that explores the intrusive thoughts or the secret highs that come at midnight, the style choice is made all the more fascinating.

Especially when we consider the high shine allure of ‘showgirl’ performance and production - it’s a life and a culture defined by a shiny, beautifully coiffed exterior that is often laminated over a seedier underbelly. Which (again, from what we know) seems to align with the darker narratives I suspect will be present on Midnights.

Which is to say, in short, I’m obsessed.
