Favourite Outfits of 2012: TSS

To celebrate the end of the year, I’ll be counting down my favourite outfits Taylor stepped out in during the calendar year. This list will cover everything from red carpets to candid ensembles and more.

Favourite Outfits of 2012: Sarah’s Picks

Event - The Lorax press conference

Sarah: Though this outfit may be simplistic, I think the swinging skirt with its soft pleats and the knee-length hemline are a perfect fit for Taylor’s retro style. The sleeveless aspect also offers a sweet silhouette. Bow heels by Christian Louboutin with red soles that perfectly match the dress are a great finishing touch. I’m also glad Taylor decided to leave her hair untouched and her wrists jewel-less.

Event - Z100 Jingle Ball

Sarah: Deceptively sexy. Taylor pulls off a half-up/half-down hairdo with a relatively boring looking LBD that’s spiced up by daring leather accented cut outs and metallic inserted heels by her favourite red carpet shoe designer Jimmy Choo. The cut-out trend has been absolutely everywhere on the red carpet and Taylor generally isn’t one for risks but I’m glad she went for this trend and decided to try it out with a bit of a fresher take on it.

Candid - October 4

Sarah: One of Taylor’s strongest points, fashion-wise, is her ability to make anything work in her favour. And I mean anything. Velvet cat loafers with polka dot cropped pants, a contrast collar burgundy sweater and a bright brown leather satchel. For some reason, it just works. I love how she Jackie Kennedy’d this outfit by slinging on a ladylike string of pearls and her classic Wayfarer shades.

Candid - November 27

Sarah: Arguably her most put-together candid outfit of the calendar year. Everything about this outfit represents staple pieces that should be in every girl’s closet. A solid pair of jeans, leather satchel, navy blazer, scoop-neck white tee and some brown leather oxfords. Easy, casual and completely on-point fashion wise.

Candid - November 21

Sarah: This would be another one of those occasions where Taylor makes anything work for her. I love when she gets sort of quirky with her choices and mixes and matches fabrics and creates her own unique colour palette. In this case, she went with one of her favourite cable knit sweaters by Ralph Lauren in a robin eggshell to complement her eyes and tan Ralph Lauren jodphurs with leather knee patches to offset her blonde hair. A dark brown satchel and cranberry velvet loafers warm up the look and brings it all together.

Award - MTV Video Music Awards

Sarah: Talk about daring choices. This was the sweetest breath of fresh air I’ve experienced with Taylor on the red carpet during 2012. Something we’ve yet to see before. A stark, all-white tuxedo suit from Taylor Swift. Practically the queen of Sparkly Dresses. Of dresses, period. And she wears pants to an awards show, a phenomenon unheard of before. Blunt bangs, a straightened blow out, kohl-rimmed eyes and gladiator gold sandals finished the look off. Personally, I would have preferred a pair of Christian Louboutin Un Bout heels like the ones she wore to the Target Deluxe party, but I can hardly fault her for sneaking in a little bit of shine to an otherwise perfect outfit.

Award - 47th Academy of Country Music Awards

Sarah: This was one of the first instances on the red carpet that Taylor stepped away from the usual and the - dare I say it - boring choices she’s been known to make during awards show seasons. For a brief moment, gone were the prom-esque dresses, the fairytale tulle, the princess sparkles, the romantic trains. Instead, they were replaced by a modern cut-out sheath dress with just a hint of gold to keep her loyalty to glitter alive. I particularly loved her relaxed hair and the different take on the smoky eye she usually requests of her make-up artist Lorrie Turk.

Photoshoot - Elle Canada

Sarah: As a Canadian it’s probably biased of me to love this photoshoot as much as I do. But when you see the extravagant gowns chosen for this shoot, like the one pictured above, I don’t think I need much more reasoning than that.

Photo shoot - Marie Claire U.K.

Sarah: I’ll admit, I’ve always had a soft spot for knee-high suede boots. And the fact that Jayne Pickering, Marie Claire U.K.’s fashion editor, decided to piece together a boho and vintage-inspired shoot that included a high heeled pair with leather lace-ups and cuffs just about had me swooning. Long dresses made of unconventional fabric like lookalike snakeskin leather, floral cotton and shiny lamé all while getting Taylor to hold one of her signature namesake acoustics. Loved it.
