Favourite Outfits of 2013: taylorswiftstyle.net

It’s that time of year again! My name is Sarah and I’m the owner and creator of taylorswiftstyle.net. For the second time, I’m so happy to be counting down all my favourite outfits Taylor has worn over the last 12 months - from the sidewalks to red carpets to the stage.

This year Taylor delivered her usual brand of feminine fashion - but with a vintage twist. Gradually, we also began to see a change in her candid style towards a free-er more boho-inspired wardrobe selection. Her performance outfits also became tighter and her red carpet style a little bit sexier.

You can check out all of last year’s favourite picks here.

Candid - September 29

Sarah: People may not agree with me on this one, but I picked this candid outfit because it’s different from anything we’ve seen Taylor wear before. And there’s a cool, chic minimalist vibe going on here that I just love. It’s Taylor’s feminine take on menswear and I think she pulls it off and makes it look effortless. Plus it makes me so excited as I consider it a possible hint or teaser towards the type of style we can expect from the Album Five era. More free-flowing silhouettes as well as menswear/boho-inspired ensembles.

Candid - August 22

Sarah: On the complete flipside, I love how Taylor still sticks to her prim, girly roots and this outfit was just a perfect example of that. The allover quirky strawberry print of her dress was grounded by bow wedges - a shoe silhoeutte Taylor has never worn before. Her favourite pair of classic wayfarers added a cool Hollywood edge.

Candid - January 25

Sarah: Taylor kept warm in this plaid Dolce Vita coat and a pair of knee-high brown leather boots. I love how the overall warm colours complement each other. Who ever said bundling up meant sacrificing fashion?

Event - One Chance premiere (September 9)

Sarah: Taylor rarely styles her hair into a ponytail when she attends events so her textured ponytail here was a refreshing change. Other than that, Taylor’s custom Calvin Klein dress that features edgy cutouts makes her look extremely lean and statuesque. Taylor mixed metals with tons of silver Cathy Waterman jewels, strappy silver Zanotti sandals and a bronze mani/pedi.

In a lot of ways, this look is the perfect contrast to the similar David Koma cut out dress that made last year’s Favourite Outfits of 2012.

Event - Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (November 13)

Sarah: Before taking to the runway with the Angels, Taylor walked the pink carpet at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. If we weren’t obsessed with her legs before, Taylor showed them off once again in this long-sleeved Zuhair Murad floral sequin mini. She blended right in with the models and looked the best I’ve seen her.

What I love most about this dress is how it tastefully shows off one aspect of Taylor’s physique. A mistake celebs often make when they want to look sexy is to show it all off at once. The long sleeves on this dress actually makes the bareness of her legs that much more noticeable.

A pretty pink lip stood in for the usual red that Taylor opts for and ankle strap moss green D&G heels were a nice alternative to a boring black pump.

Event - Winter Whites Gala (November 26)

Sarah: Taylor’s best princess moment for the entire year. Brushing her bangs off to the side, piling her softly curled hair into a low updo and opting to leave her neckline bare, Taylor allowed the sparkling bodice of her Reem Acra gown to really shine while the flowing skirt completed her Winter Princess look. A pink lip and a pair of rings were her only added statements to her elegant outfit.

Award - People’s Choice Awards (January 9)

Sarah: TSS does love Taylor in a white gown. Three white outfits have made the 2013 list so far! Last year, we loved the white J. Mendel suit Taylor wore to the MTV Music Video Awards as well as the metallic-insert white J. Mendel gown she wore to the 2012 ACMs.

For 2013, Taylor’s best white hot outfit was by far this plunging v-neck Ralph Lauren gown from the People’s Choice Awards. Swept back hair and minimal jewels allowed Taylor’s smoky shadow and scene-stealing Sutra earrings - that perfectly complemented her blue eyes - take prominence.

Award - BRIT Awards (February 20)

Sarah: Taylor stated in an interview prior to the awards that she would be debuting a much darker look for both her performance and red carpet looks.

Usually when the names ‘Taylor Swift’ and 'Elie Saab’ are combined it means a super girly, embellished gown. So I knew the second that Taylor stepped out in this sequin-less, black double slit dress that I would be gushing about it at the end of the year. And here we are.

Her sleek hair, metallic cuff/belt and dark manicure all added to the overall dark romantic vibe.

Award - BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards (November 3)

Sarah: If you know anything about me, you know that I love seeing Taylor in green. So of course I had to include this emerald Jenny Packham dress in the year-end favourite outfits! Taylor matched the gold embellishments on the dress to her gold metallic Louboutins.

I particularly loved Taylor’s hair and makeup on this occasion - the loose curls were so perfect.

Photoshoot - InStyle (November 2013)

Sarah: This was another one of those ‘love at first sight’ moments I had during 2013. The moment the scans from this shoot came out I was positively sallivating and already wondering how I would describe my feelings about Taylor in this shoot when the end of the year would come around and I would have to put this list together.

There were so many amazing couture moments during this shoot - it was great to see Taylor made up like a high fashion model. Which is one of the reasons why I love seeing her in new photoshoots because her hair, makeup and clothes can be styled in ways she otherwise wouldn’t have thought of. It’s like seeing Taylor become different characters.

In addition to couture, Taylor wore Burberry on the cover!

Photoshoot - InStyle U.K. (April 2013)

Sarah: I was extremely impressed by the shoot stylist Natalie Hartley and how she managed to incorporate varying textures and fabrics throughout Taylor’s wardrobe - but still maintain the same theme of structure, delicacy and ruffles in each of her setups.

To compare, you can see the loose ruffles of her Marchesa sleeves or the scarf-like ruffle of her Gucci top in comparison to the harsh latex composite of her Roksanda Illincic dress. Both are different in fit, yet have a certain amount of structure and detail in the way they are worn and fall on Taylor.

Performance - “Highway Don’t Care” at the ACM Awards (April 7)

Sarah: Usually for performances Taylor wears a pair of sparkly oxfords and high-waisted shorts. So you can imagine how surprised and grateful I was that she decided to wear this rhinestone bodice gown for her performance with Tim McGraw and Keith Urban at one of the most prestigious country music awards of the year.

It was a perfect choice for Taylor - balancing elegance with sparkle.

Performance - “Highway Don’t Care” at ACM Presents: Tim McGraw’s SuperStar Summer Night (April 8)

Sarah: Taylor wore two Elizabeth & James LB-cut out-Ds in 2013 (this was the other one) but I particularly loved the daring open back and bodycon silhouette of this dress. With the exposure of her back plus the cutouts in mind, Taylor styled the look with cut-out black heels and simple studded jewelry.

Performance - CMA Fest (June 6)

Sarah: By now does it surprise you to see another “Highway Don’t Care” performance outfit in my top favourite list? Taylor wore a /lot/ of black-high waisted shorts and sparkly oxfords during 2013. But the surprise addition of a simple but beautiful Victoria Beckham sleeveless lace top made this performance ensemble so memorable to me.

That and I couldn’t resist creating a “Tim McGraw” remix audio from Taylor’s set here and meshing it with a 2007 performance.
